Backmarker Luc Cowley finished strongly to take first place in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Fairweathers Winter series event at Fairhall last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 43km handicap event covered two laps of the Benmorven/Ridge/ Godfreys Road course. Always a challenging course with the full climbs at the Marlborough Ridge saw a few riders suffer on the first lap. As the field closed up on the final lap several groups joined and after the Ridge climb just over a minute separated the two main groups with 8km to ride. Break markers (off 2m 30s) Josh Scott, Paul Newman and Cowley were driving the front group, whilst the chasing group was headed by scratch markers Gerard van Antwerpen, Tony Catterick, Jeremy McKenzie and Sean O’Neill. The front group still had 55sec at the line with Cowley taking line honours in the sprint from Newman, Larry Kendall (off 12m), Alan Milne (off 12m) and Georgia Catterick (off 5m 30s). Fastest time honours went to Van Antwerpen from Catterick, McKenzie and O’Neill.
Meanwhile, this Saturday all riders will contest two-up time trials at Renwick. The open grade 40km event for the Geddes Memorial Cups will cover an out and return course on the Wairau Valley Road. The top pairing favoured for time honours will be the Ray Dunstan/Jeremy McKenzie combination with other top combinations fighting out the minor placings. The junior under 17 event over 20km will take place on the Waihopai Valley Road. All riders are to assemble opposite the Grove Mill Winery at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
