Sean O,Neill gained his second consecutive win when he sprinted in to victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s event at Fairhall last Saturday.
The 40km open grade handicap event drew a good field in the final race of the season on the Benmorven/Ridge/Godfreys Road course. O’Neills 4min break group worked extremely hard to catch the combined 8min and 10min group only 3km from home. Fifteen riders lined up for the sprint home with O,Neill again holding off co-marker Glenn Herkt from Andrew Gifford (4m), Luc Cowley (4m) and Ryan Lock (4m) respectively. The depleted scratch bunch saw Gerard van Antwerpen and Nick Batt take the time honours respectively by just 44sec after a tough ride.
The junior under 17 grade rode a 20km handicap event over one lap of the Open course. Scratch marker Thomas Westend was in excellent form as he drove through the field at a rapid rate to catch front runner Sam Morgan (off 11m) in the last few kms. Westend took a well deserved first place and fastest time whilst Morgan held on for second place just ahead of break riders Callum Caughey (1m) and Christopher Grammer.
This Saturday afternoon the junior under 17 grade riders will compete in a 24km handicap event on the Taylor Pass Road. Riders are to assemble just past the roundabout at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
