Church Takes Palatchie Cup Victory

Veteran rider Denis Church made the most of his handicap and his hill climbing ability to take a clear victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s James Palatchie Memorial Cup event from Riverlands last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 45km handicap event covered a course over the Weld and Dashwood Pass on State Highway One and turning for home approximately 2km up the Awatere Valley Road. Except for a headwind out to the bottom of the Weld Pass conditions were favourable and the hill climbers in each bunch rode away from their co-markers on the outward journey. On the return leg after the climb back over the hills Church was still well out in front. Several small groups were chasing hard for the minor placings. Church (off 25m) rolled over the line for handicap honours 4 minutes clear of his nearest rivals, Matt Straker (off 6m 30s), Richard Hill (off 6m 30s), J J Payne (off 13m) and Stuart Curnow (off 25m) respectively. Other good rides came from youngsters Quinn Karwowski (off 2m 30s) and co-marker Leatham Landon-Lanewho finished another 1m 20s back in 7th and 8th place respectively. Karwowski took the junior under 17 grade Palatchie Cup for his effort. Fastest time went to break rider Brent Harris (off 1m) who teamed up with co-marker Lee Griggs and were to strong over lone scratch rider Gerard van Antwerpen.
