Wayne Palatchie took line honours as the front markers stole the show in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s last race of the season at Renwick on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade and junior under 17 combined 50km handicap event started at Forrest Estate and followed an out and return course on the Northbank Road finishing at the salmon farm just prior to State Highway 6. The five handicap groups encountered strong headwinds on the outward journey. The 22 minute front markers of Palatchie, Denis Church, and junior under 15 rider Georgia Catterick, were ably assisted by Michelle Catterick and Dave Hutchison and held a good 10 minute lead at the turn for home. The strong scratch group of Gerard van Antwerpen, Andrew Jamieson, Jeremy McKenzie, Josh Scott and Brodie Catterick had worked well together to bring in the 2 minute, 3 and a half minute, and the 7 and a half minute groups, a few kilometres after the turn. The front group came home seven minutes clear with Palatchie taking the win by 5 seconds to Georgia Catterick and another 8 seconds back to Denis Church. A huge group of 22 riders sprinted in for 6th place which was taken by Glen Herkt (off 3m 30s) over Warren Hall (off 7m 30s), Van Antwerpen, McKenzie, and Jamieson. Time honours went to Van Antwerpen.
