George Baxter took double honours when he sprinted in a large bunch to take first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s event at Fairhall last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 43km handicap event started and finished at Fairhall hall covering two laps of a Benmorven circuit, Ridge Resort hill, Godfreys Road course. The field tightened up rapidly over the first lap with the back markers in full charge on the final lap. The strong scratch group of Baxter, Gerard van Antwerpen, Tony Catterick, Jeremy McKenzie, Ray Dunstan and Brodie Catterick were not to be denied when they pulled in the leading group with just 4km to go. Sixteen riders lined up for the final sprint into Fairhall. Baxter, home on holiday from Australia, was just to good on the day to take line honours ahead of Van Antwerpen, Dunstan, Richard Hill (off 5m), Brodie Catterick and Rhonda Murphy (off 7m).
The junior under 17 grade rode a 22km handicap over one lap of the course. Will Hart (off 2m) rode away from his co-marker Nick Blakiston for a good win 35 seconds ahead of the scratch pair of Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski. Saunders took the sprint for time honours and second place just ahead of Karwowski and Blakiston.
