Frank Marfell produced a strong sprint to take line honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Pelorus Cup event at Renwick last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 60km handicap event started at Forrest Estate and covered an undulating course to the top of the Mahakipawa hill, above Havelock, and return. The 10 strong 10 minute bunch was in command when 8 of the riders regrouped after spreading on the Mahakipawa climb. The scratch and 4 minute break groups had disintegrated after punctures and some unfortunate incidents on the hill descent. Several breakaway attempts by Ben Verhoef on the fast return journey were shortlived with the result coming down to the final sprint. Marfell’s long leadout proved successful when he just held on to beat Mike McManaway, Graham Henderson and Rhonda Murphy respectively. Fastest time went to scratch rider Gerard van Antwerpen in 1hr 33m 03s with Glen Bateman (off 4m) taking the second fastest time in 1hr 36m 04s.
The junior under 17 grade raced over 3 laps of the Renwick/Vintage Lane circuit. Nick Blakiston won the handicap section to take the Pelorus Cup from Quinn Karwowski and Callum Saunders.
