Marlborough Boys Strike Gold In Team Sprint

Marlborough boys Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski struck gold at the Rabodirect Age Group National Track Championships at the ILT Velodrome in Invercargill on Friday evening.
After Karwowski’s bronze medal on Tuesday and Saunders consistent performances just outside the medals during the week, the boys combined with Cameron Ford (Nelson) as Tasman’s junior under 17 sprint team. The opening round saw Tasman (50.888s) as top qualifiers over Mid-South Canterbury (51.011s). The final was electrifying with the Tasman boys taking a great win in 50.758s over a close Mid-South Canterbury at 50.777s. Aucland (51.565s) took third place over Canterbury (52.787s).
The final day of the championships on Saturday saw the junior under 17 boys competing in the sprints. The qualifying round placed Karwowski 6th, Ford 7th, Liam Julian (Nelson) 9th and Saunders 10th. The first round saw Karwowski, Julian and Saunders proceed but were all put out in the quarter finals. The ride off for 5th-8th place was taken by Saunders (5th), Julian (7th) and Karwowski (8th).
The Tasman team finished off their successful week on Saturday evening with Michaela Kerr (Nelson) taking Bronze in the junior under 15 girls scratch race, and Nelson’s Kristoff Ford, Daniel Ellison and Sean Hambrook taking bronze in the junior under sprint team event.
