Conal Sloan was decisive in winning a large bunch sprint to claim the Anderson Rosebowl in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s road race at Okaramio last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 35km handicap event covered a rolling course from Okaramio Tavern to Havelock and return. The strong middle handicap groups made good time on the outward journey. Just after the climb back out of the Queen Charlotte Drive at Havelock on the homeward leg the 3 minute group caught the 6 minute group to swell the bunch to 15 riders. This group sped home, hitting the front of the field with approximately 5km to go. With splits occuring in the group over the last few kilometres Leatham Landon-Lane (off 3m) had a good break but was mowed down in the sprint to the line. Sloan (off 3m) took line honours from Warren Hall (off 6m) and Todd Neal (off 3m). The strong scratch pairing of Gerard van Antwerpen and Tony Catterick still took the fastest time honours (Van Antwerpen) by 1m 23s with Sloan’s group taking the next time placings by 5 seconds over the 2 minute break riders.
The junior under 17 grade rode over 18km on the Northbank Road for the Keighley Cup. Nick Blakiston retained the trophy in a sprint finish over Will Hart.
