Junior under 17 rider Callum Saunders won the final race in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Cycle World stage race series from Wither Hills Winery last Wednesday evening.
The first 12km stage covered a course around the Benmorven circuit up the Ridge Resort hill and then on to finish up Fairbourne Drive. After the climb up the Ridge Resort only six riders were left in contention for the win. Saunders gained the advantage on the uphill finish to take line honours by 4 seconds to Brodie Catterick and Gerard van Antwerpen. Stage two over 10km went up and around the small Hawkesbury circuit to finish in Dog Point Road. A group of 8 riders contested the final sprint with Saunders winning closely from Van Antwerpen and Brent Ackroyd. The final 6km stage back down New Renwick Road saw Van Antwerpen break with a kilometre to go and held off to win by 2 seconds to Saunders and Catterick.
The overall result saw Saunders win by 2 seconds to Van Antwerpen with another 2 seconds back to Catterick in third place. The sealed handicap on the event went to Glen Herkt (1m) by 6 seconds to Saunders (20s) and Quinn Karwowski (1m) second equal.
