Jono Lee confirmed his status as one of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s top road cyclists when he won the Cycle World series Stage race No2 at fairhall last wednesday evening.
The cold and damp conditions didn’t deter the riders as they competed in the first 12km stage from Wither Hills Winery on New Renwick Road, into Brancott Road and finishing at the top of Wrekin Road. The long haul up Brancott Road saw the field split up with Lee, and junior under 17 riders Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski going clear. The finish on the Wrekin Hill saw Lee take a 2 second advantage over Saunders with another 4 seconds to Karwowski.
Stage two covered a 12km course down Brancott Road, up to Godfreys Road and return to the Wither Hills Winery. Lee rode clear on Brancott Road with the chasing bunch splitting as they turned for home in Godfreys Road. Lee increased his lead for a convincing win by 25 seconds to Saunders and Jamie Kidd, with Karwowski heading the main bunch in 21 seconds back.
The overall result for the evening went to Lee by 27 seconds over Saunders, with Kidd another 22 seconds back in third place. The sealed handicap over the two stages went to Graham Henderson by 24 seconds to Joe Blakiston with Warren Hall another 53 seconds back in third place.
