Jono Lee’s strong hill finish saw him take line honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s summernite event at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
The Cycle World Series second graded event over 34km started at the Wither Hills Winery and covered a course over 3 laps of the Benmorven circuit finishing at the Ridge Resort. A combination of approximately a dozen ‘A’ and ‘B’ grade riders were still together in the latter stages, after a strong breakaway on the last lap of Benmorven by Gerard van Antwerpen was brought back. The climb to the end of the Ridge Resort Road and the fast descent to finish back on the flat saw Lee in strong form to win the ‘A’ grade by 20 seconds over Callum Saunders with Jamie Kidd another 8 seconds back in third place. Jeremy McKenzie was a convincing winner of the ‘B’ grade finishing just 21 seconds behind Lee and 24 seconds ahead of his nearest rivals Clayton Morgan and Lee Griggs. Joe Blakiston held off Scott Manson by 3 seconds to win the ‘C’ grade, with Graham Henderson another 28 seconds back in third place.
