Consistent riding saw Joe Blakiston take the Vincent Shield in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s opening day of the winter season at Renwick on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 32km handicap event was ridden in cool damp conditions over 4 laps of the Condors Bend/Renwick block. The 15 minute front markers of Blakiston and Denis Church teamed well and were never headed with Blakiston taking the final surge to the line from Church. Only 40 seconds back Mike McManaway (off 7m) sprinted in Mike Murphy (off 5m), Glen Herkt (off 5m) and new rider Lee Griggs (off 7m) for third place. Fastest time was fought out between the 4 remaining scratch riders with Gerard van Antwerpen heading off Jono Lee, Tony Catterick and Brent Harris.
The junior under 17 grade rode over 2 laps of the circuit (16km) for the Opening Day Cup. The 2 minute break riders Quinn Karwowski and Leatham Landon-Lane rode strongly to be only 34 seconds down on the scratch riders and were rewarded with a fine win to Karwowski with Landon-Lane 14 seconds adrift in second place. Scratch riders Callum Saunders and Will Hart sprinted in for third place with Saunders taking the fastest time honours.
