Warren Hall was again in good sprinting form to just hold out co-marker Martin Fletcher in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade event last from Renwick Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 45km handicap event drew a small field on the Renwick to Wairau Valley and return course. Most groups moved well in the tailwind outward journey but had to really work on the way homme as the back markers closed in. Nothing could stop the 7 minute markers as they forged into the lead with Hall taking victory in the close sprint with Fletcher, with Richard Hill a few seconds back. The scratch markers and 4 minute markers were only 41 seconds back with Brent Ackroyd (4m) heading off Max Pendleton (4m), and Gerard van Antwerpen in the sprint to the line. Van Antwerpen took time honours from co-marker Tony Catterick.
The junior under 17 grade rode a 25km handicap event on the open course. New rider Brodie Catterick (off 2m) showed his speed to take the win from co-marker Leatham Landon-Lane with a good ride to lone scratch marker Will Hart to finish third, and also taking fastest time.
