Pendleton Powers To Pelorus Cup Win

Max Pendleton made a decisive break over the last few kilometres to take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Pelorus Cup event from Renwick on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 60km event was ridden on a new course from Forrest Estate Winery to the top of the Mahakipawa hill at Havelock and return. With headwinds on the outward journey the front markers were soon caught. After the Mahakipawa hill climb six of the 12 minute group remained intact and were well clear of the chasing groups. Pendleton made his break from this group approximately 5km from home and held off his co-markers by 5 seconds for a well deserved win. Wayne Smith led in the chasers Mark Hawkins, Richard Hill, visiting Christchurch rider Chloe McCaughan, and Warren Hall respectively. Fastest time went to scratch rider Tony Catterick in 1hr 32m 44s heading off co-markers Andrew Curnow and Gerard van Antwerpen.
The junior under 17 Pelorus Cup event was run as a 24km massed start event over 3 laps of the Renwick/Vintage Lane block. The field stayed together throughout the journey with Callum Saunders taking the sprint finish for fastest time from Will Hart and Quinn Karwowski. The Pelorus Cup went on sealed handicap went to last years winner Leatham Landon-Lane from Nathan McIntyre and Quinn Karwowski.
