Gerard van Antwerpen’s strong sprint finish saw him take first place and fastest time in the Cuddon Cycling Marlborough Open 80km Championship at Fairhall on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade handicap event started at Fairhall Hall, covering a course of three laps around the Benmorven/small Hawkesbury circuit taking in the Ridge Resort climb each lap. As the race progressed it was obvious that the windy and hot conditions was going to play into the hands of the backmarkers. In lap two the scratchmarkers had caught the 4 minute break bunch and the 9 minute markers had caught the 15 minute front group. At 10km to go the two groups joined which then left 12 riders to contest the final sprint. Van Antwerpen held off a strong challenge from co-marker Andrew Jamieson with Ethan Roach in third place. Van Antwerpen made the clean sweep in winning the C Gibson Challenge Cup (First place), the Savoy Trophy (First local rider), the Ray Gibson Challenge Cup (First fastest time), and the Masters title sash. Other titles went to Roach (Junior under 19 sash), Brent Ackroyd (Senior Men sash), and Rhonda Murphy (Womens sash).
The junior under 17 grade raced over one lap of the open course for the 25km championship. Again the scratch riders prevailed with a good finish from Nick Blakiston to take the title from co-marker Quinn Karwowski. Leatham Landon-Lane (off 5m) finished third.
