Pete Halligan gave a good display of sprinting when he won Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade event on the Waihopai Road last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 40km handicap event covered a course from the Grove Mill Winery to just beyond Craiglochart and return. The eight strong 4 minute bunch worked hard to pick up the 6 minute group before the turn for home. This large group came home quickly to hold off the two minute break bunch and scratch bunch by just 40 seconds and 1 minute 15 seconds respectively. Halligan was to strong in the sprint to the line from Andrew Gifford (4m), Wayne Smith (6m) and Chris Ireland (6m). Scratch marker Gerard van Antwerpen again took fastest time from co-markers Chris Heywood and David Craig.
The junior under 17 grade rode a 20km handicap event to just beyond the Spy Base and return. Laura de Castro (off 20m) made the most of her handicap to take victory by just 2 seconds. A group of 5 riders sprinted for the minor placings with Callum Saunders (off 3m) taking second place ahead of scratch rider Ethan Roach and Leatham landon-Lane (off 3m). Roach took fastest time in 31m 48s.
