Good conditions provided close times between the top two Cuddon Cycling Marlborough teams in last Saturday’s centre team time trial event at Renwick.
The open grade 40km event covered a course from the Waihopai Valley turnoff on State Highway 63 to just short of Wairau Valley township and return. On the outward journey the team of Ray Dunstan, George Baxter, Jono Lee and Paul Johnson were 3 seconds up on Tony Catterick, Conway Taylor, Gerard van Antwerpen and Chris Heywood even after they had lost Johnson early on. With a slight head wind on the homeward leg a good competition evoved with Cattericks team having a 1 second advantage approximately 6km from home. Hard riding over the last few kilometres saw Catterick, Taylor, Van Antwerpen and Heywood cross the line for victory in a good time of 53m 51s, with Dunstan, Baxter and Lee second on 54m 00s. Third place went to the only other team to break the hour, Brian Streeter, Todd Neal, Graham Henderson and Lance Spencer at 59m 30s. The first Women’s team of Mary Lister, Merrill Hughes, Rhonda Murphy and Willi Borst recorded a very commendable time of 64m 12s.
The junior under 17 grade competed over 20km with the trio of Callum Streeter, Ethan Roach and Jamie Hawke recording a good time of 30m 30s for the win. Sonia Ginders, Georgia Hammond, Emma Crosswell and Anna Duggan were the fastest junior women in 37m 21s.
