Cameron Karwowski was to strong in the final sprint to take first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Pelorus Cup event from Canvastown last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 80km handicap event covered a course from Canvastown to the top of the Whangamoa and return. With two major climbs on the Rai Saddle and Whangamoa and a head wind on the outward journey the gap between the scratch riders and the front mark had narrowed from 26m to 6m at the turn for home. The trip back through the Collins Valley saw the scratch riders Gerard van Antwerpen, Jono Lee, Chris Heywood and Karwowski rapidly pull in all but 15m markers Todd Neal and Craig Murphy. With Lee tailing off on the Rai Saddle climb the remaining scratch riders caught the front pair before Pelorus taking Neal with them. Karwowski headed a long sprint over Van Antwerpen with Heywood and Neal a couple of seconds back in third and fourth place.
The junior under 17 handicap event over 35km for the Pelorus Cup covered a course to Rai Valley and return. Nick Blakiston (off 20m) held the lead for much of the race when he was overtaken by Will Hart and Callum Saunders (off 10m). This pair went to the line separated by only half a wheel with Hart taking the victory. Scratchman Callum Streeter had chased all the way to only be 39 seconds in arrears to take third place and fastest time.
