Visiting cyclist heads off field for Marlborough 80

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Veteran Brian Grant, of the Star and Garter Wheelers club in Nelson, had a convincing win in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s 80km open championship at Fairhall on Saturday afternoon.

The open grade handicap started and finished at Fairhall Hall and was ridden over three laps of the Benmorven/Hawkesbury circuit taking in the Ridge Resort hill climb on each lap. It was the 18min middle markers who dominated the proceedings, with a good working group in the first two laps.

A lot of groups fell apart in the final lap as the riders tired.

Grant (off 18min) and co-marker Josh Scott (CCM) hit the front with a strong ride to the finish, Grant taking the line honours and the Gibson Challenge Cup and Scott taking the Savoy Trophy for first Marlborough Rider home. Just over a minute later another local Brent Ackroyd (off 18m) headed off co-marker Paul Ashley (SGW) and Craig Rendall (CCM off 26m) for third.

Fastest time went to junior under 19 scratch rider Keiran Hambrook (SGW) who had broken away from the scratch group at the start to take time by 2m 52s.

Hambrook took the Gibson Challenge Cup and junior under 19 title. Local Gerard van Antwerpen took second fastest and the veteran title. Other titles went to Dawn Chalmers (SGW) women, and Scott, senior men. The junior under 17 grade competed in a 25km championship over one lap of the open course. Georgia Hammond (CCM) outsprinting clubmate co-markers Daniel Creswell and Emma Cresswell for a fine win and the fastest junior under 17 women’s title.

A strong scratch group saw Marlborough riders dominant with Callum Streeter producing a good sprint for the junior under 17 men’s title from Richard Anderson and Ethan Roach.

Smith Keeps Away For Win

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Cassandra Smith had a strong ride to take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s handicap event on the Northbank Road last Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 60km event started at Forrest Estate Winery and followed a course up the Northbank Road and returned to finish just short of State Highway One. On the outward journey the 3m 30s break bunch had ridden hard to keep away from scratch bunch and had caught the 6m group just before the turn. Smith and co-marker Denis Church (off 33m) were still out front by a big margin at the turn for home. Smith rode clear in the latter stages for a fine win by 43 seconds back to Church. The scratch group of Chris Heywood, Gerard van Antwerpen, Brendan Neylon, Tony Catterick and Conway Taylor caught the main bunch just 12km from home to finish only 24 seconds behind Church. Van Antwerpen took the sprint for third place and fastest time honours ahead of Glen Herkt (3m 30s), Martyn Bruce (3m 30s), and Pete Halligan (off 6m).

The junior under 17 grade competed in a 30km handicap event also on Northbank Road. Good teamwork saw Emma Crosswell and Elodie Jacoby ( off 3m) saw them go through the field with Crosswell taken the final sprint to the line from Jacoby with Anna Duggan (off 7m) taking third place. Will hart took fastest time off scratch. A 20km handicap event saw nick Blakiston win over Piers Landon-Lane and Lydia Barnett.

Tight Team Time Trial Result

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Good conditions provided close times between the top two Cuddon Cycling Marlborough teams in last Saturday’s centre team time trial event at Renwick.

The open grade 40km event covered a course from the Waihopai Valley turnoff on State Highway 63 to just short of Wairau Valley township and return. On the outward journey the team of Ray Dunstan, George Baxter, Jono Lee and Paul Johnson were 3 seconds up on Tony Catterick, Conway Taylor, Gerard van Antwerpen and Chris Heywood even after they had lost Johnson early on. With a slight head wind on the homeward leg a good competition evoved with Cattericks team having a 1 second advantage approximately 6km from home. Hard riding over the last few kilometres saw Catterick, Taylor, Van Antwerpen and Heywood cross the line for victory in a good time of 53m 51s, with Dunstan, Baxter and Lee second on 54m 00s. Third place went to the only other team to break the hour, Brian Streeter, Todd Neal, Graham Henderson and Lance Spencer at 59m 30s. The first Women’s team of Mary Lister, Merrill Hughes, Rhonda Murphy and Willi Borst recorded a very commendable time of 64m 12s.

The junior under 17 grade competed over 20km with the trio of Callum Streeter, Ethan Roach and Jamie Hawke recording a good time of 30m 30s for the win. Sonia Ginders, Georgia Hammond, Emma Crosswell and Anna Duggan were the fastest junior women in 37m 21s.

Karwowski & Hart Take Pelorus Cups

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Cameron Karwowski was to strong in the final sprint to take first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Pelorus Cup event from Canvastown last Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 80km handicap event covered a course from Canvastown to the top of the Whangamoa and return. With two major climbs on the Rai Saddle and Whangamoa and a head wind on the outward journey the gap between the scratch riders and the front mark had narrowed from 26m to 6m at the turn for home. The trip back through the Collins Valley saw the scratch riders Gerard van Antwerpen, Jono Lee, Chris Heywood and Karwowski rapidly pull in all but 15m markers Todd Neal and Craig Murphy. With Lee tailing off on the Rai Saddle climb the remaining scratch riders caught the front pair before Pelorus taking Neal with them. Karwowski headed a long sprint over Van Antwerpen with Heywood and Neal a couple of seconds back in third and fourth place.

The junior under 17 handicap event over 35km for the Pelorus Cup covered a course to Rai Valley and return. Nick Blakiston (off 20m) held the lead for much of the race when he was overtaken by Will Hart and Callum Saunders (off 10m). This pair went to the line separated by only half a wheel with Hart taking the victory. Scratchman Callum Streeter had chased all the way to only be 39 seconds in arrears to take third place and fastest time.

‘Whatamongrel’ To Karwowski and Neal

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

Cameron Karwowski and Todd Neal were in control to take the Whatamango trophies for fastest time and handicap respectively in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s 3 stage event last Saturday.

The open grade 27km first stage from Blenheim to Picton saw 11 riders stay in the front group until the climb on the Elevation just 3km from the line. Seven riders lined up for the sprint with Conal Sloan and Gerard van Antwerpen gaining 1 second over George Baxter, Neal, Karwowski, Chris Heywood and Ray Dunstan respectively. Neal managing to finish with the top riders took the sealed handicap by 7 seconds to Rhonda Murphy and Brent Ackroyd.

Stage two, a 10km time trial, covered a course from Waikawa to the top of Port Underwood taking in the gruelling Whatamango hill climb. Karwowski posted the winning time of 27m 49s to gain a 6 second lead over Baxter with Dunstan another 32 seconds back. The handicap points went convincingly to Peter Burge with an 1m 18s gap to Craig Murphy and another 14 seconds to the consistent Neal.

The final stage from Picton back to Blenheim created an interesting situation with only 6 seconds separating Karwowski and Baxter. With time bonus sprints worth 8,6,4, and 2 seconds at Koromiko, Tuamarina and the finish, tactical riding was vital. Seven riders went clear on the Elevation climb with the first sprint going to a determined Baxter from Karwowski. Unfortunately Baxter punctured a few kilometres later which gave Karwowski a cruise to overall victory. Van Antwerpen took the stage from Sloan and Heywood. Mike McManaway took the handicap win by 1m 22s from Neal with another 7 seconds to Mary Lister.

The overall result was a 36 second win for Karwowski over Dunstan with another 1m 22s back to Heywood in third place. Neal easily won the handicap trophy with 15 points to Craig Murphy (8pt) and McManaway (7pt).

The junior under 17 grade rode a 2 stage event to Picton and return with the handicap winner taking the Redwood Fisheries Cup. Stage one saw Ethan Roach just have the edge over Jamie Hawke in the latter stages over the Elevation for a 9 second win. Will Hart held off Callum Saunders to take third place. The sealed handicap went to Emma Cresswell by 36 seconds to Roach with another 7 seconds back to Hart in third place.

Roach was dominant by taking the final stage back to Blenheim by 2 seconds over Hawke in the sprint to the line. Saunders headed off Hart for third place which also gave them first and second place respectively in the handicap section with Roach in third place.

The overall handicap result for the Redwood Fisheries Cup went to Hart (9pts) with the best result on the final stage from Roach (9pts) and Saunders (8pts).

Roach took overall fastest time by 11 seconds to Hawke with Hart taking third fastest over Saunders by 3 seconds.

One of the highlights of the day was the top two junior under 17 riders taking part in the time trial up the Whatamango hill. Hawke blitzed all riders on the day to record 26m 57s with Roach recording 29m 12s for fifth fastest time.

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Veteran Gerard van Antwerpen gave a solid performance to take fastest time and the Ray Squire Memorial Cup in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Troubador Trophy event at Fairhall on Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 63km massed start/sealed handicap event was run over 7 laps of the Benmorven circuit after the Rapaura circuit was closed due to flood damage. The field broke up quickly after the start leaving 13 riders in the lead group. Pressure applied by Tony Catterick in the third lap saw the split with six riders going clear which included Catterick, van Antwerpen, Conway Taylor, Marcel Mulder, Jamie Kidd and Jason Allen. This group expande their lead out to 4 minutes with van Antwerpen being a convincing winner in the sprint to the line from Taylor and Kidd. The Troubador Trophy for the sealed handicap was won by veteran campaigner Gill Painter by a good margin of 2m 49s to Pete Halligan and another 5m 02s to Kidd in third place.

The junior under 17 grade rode over 3 laps (27km) of the open course also in a massed start event. A good battle evolved between usual scratch riders Ethan Roach and  Jamie Hawke with Hawke taking line honours for fastest time. Pim Greven took third place approximately 6 minutes back. The open grade 51.5km time trial covered a rolling course from Forrest Estate Winery to Havelock and return. The riders faced cold conditions (4 degrees) with an easy ride out and a battle into the head wind between Havelock and Okaramio on the return journey. Dunstan was in control at the turn posting a 32 minutes 44 seconds to be up on Cameron Karwowski (33m 32s) and George Baxter (35m 17s). Herkt Takes David Duff Memorial

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Veteran Glen Herkt exploded out of the leading pack for a convincing sprint win in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s David Duff Memorial Trophy event at Fairhall on Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 56km massed start event covered a course from Fairhall hall, around the large Hawkesbury circuit 4 times and return. Although there was a good pace from the start the cool and calm conditions saw a large lead group of 15 riders still intact at the end of the first lap. This group was only reduced to 12 riders on the last lap with the normal scratch riders not being able to shake any others on the way home. A strong sprint to the line saw Herkt emerge out of the pack to take victory from Tony Catterick, Jamie Kidd, Mark Grammer and Marty Bruce. The sealed handicap was won with a consistent ride by Cassandra Smith (off 38m) by just 10 seconds to sister Rhonda Murphy (off 11m) and another 2m 30s to Todd Neal (off 6m) in third place.

The junior under 17 grade also competed in a massed start event over 26km over 2 laps of the small Hawkesbury circuit and return for the Newport Trophy. It was no surprise to see the top three riders go clear early and line up for the sprint home. Okaramio Challenge To Kidd

Jamie Kidd’s awesome effort over the last 6 kilometres saw him snatch victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy event at Okaramio last Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 50km handicap event covered a rolling course out to Havelock over the Mahakipawa hill to almost Linkwater and return. The Mahakipawa hill was the test for most riders for their bunches to stay intact. The 4 minute break bunch was solid and started to mow its way through the field on the homeward journey. Kidd and Mark Grammer had ridden away for a short period but were soon caght by their co-markers again. Kidd made his big move on the Rocky Creek hill and time trialled home to take line honours 5 seconds ahead of a 10 strong group. Josh Roach (4m) took the sprint for second place ahead of Todd Neal (6m), Rhonda Murphy (10m) and Stephen Rooney (4m).
