Hall and Van Antwerpen In Tight Finish For Trophies

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

Warren Hall and Gerard van Antwerpen took first place and fastest time respectively in the closest finish this season at Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Van Antwerpen Trophies event at Grovetown on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 44km handicap event drew a good field of 36 riders in the fine and windy conditions. The race started and finished in Vickerman Street, Grovetown, covering 3 laps of the lower Wairau circuit taking in Jones Road, Morgans Road, Swamp Road, Dillons Point Road, and Rowberrys Road. The six handicap groups gradually closed up over the first 2 laps with all the action in the final lap. The 5 minute bunch joined the 8 minute bunch with only 5km to go and then were caught by the 6 remaining scratch riders only 3km from home. This large group of 19 riders picked up the frontrunners Denis Church (off 23m) and co-marker Stuart Cunow with 2km left. A furious sprint developed 400m out with Hall (off 8m) holding out scratch marker Van Antwerpen by just half a wheel, on the line to take victory ahead of Brodie Catterick (scratch), Graham Henderson (8m) and Mike Murphy (5m).
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 24km handicap event for the Amtman Trophy and the Sincock Trophy. Callum Saunders rode a solid race from the scratch mark to take first place and fastest time, a repeat of last years effort. Co-marker Quinn Karwowski took second place just ahead of Nick Blakiston (off 1m 30s) in third place.

Medway 2 Stage To Van Antwerpen

Saturday, April 9th, 2011
Gerard van Antwerpen snatched victory by just 6 seconds in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s tough 2 stage event from Montana Winery to the Medway and return last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade first stage over 42km was a handicap event that took the riders over the Weld and Dashwood Pass and then the long grind up the Awatere Valley to finish on the steep Medway hill. Strong teamwork by the six 12 minute markers eventually saw three riders go clear on the Blairich hill. The trio hit the front of the field soon after and were never headed. Warren Hall took the uphill sprint for line honours by 3 seconds to Alan Milne with another 1 second back to Richard Hill. A close finish for fastest time saw Josh Scott victor over Van Antwerpen with Andrew Jamieson 5 seconds back.
The final stage was a 40km massed start back to Montana. After the ride down the Awatere Valley only 9 riders remained in the front group, but this was shortlived as the riders climbed into the hills. At the top of the Weld Pass Van Antwerpen, Scott and Jamieson were clear and increasing their lead. In the latter stages Van Antwerpen sprung away to take the stage by 6 seconds from Scott and Jamieson. The handicap section again went to Hall from Hill and Jamie Kidd.
The overall classification went to Van Antwerpen by 6 seconds to Scott with another 5 seconds back to Jamieson in third place. The overall handicap result went to Hall by 1m 05s to Hill and another 2m 12s back to Milne in third place.
The junior under 17 2 stage event was run from Dumgree Road to Medway and return. The stage one massed start over 22km saw Quinn Karwowski over the line first by 1 second over Callum Saunders with another 4 seconds back to Nick Blakiston in third place. The sealed handicap was taken by Karwowski over Blakiston and Saunders. The return stage again saw Karwowski wi over Saunders with Blakiston 1m 05s back in third place. The handicap also went to Karwowski from Saunders and Blakiston.

Tough Two Stage

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade riders will compete in the tough Montana-Medway and return two stage event tomorrow afternoon.
The first 40km stage is a handicap event covering a course from Montana Winery over the Weld and Dashwood Pass climbs, and then the uphill drag up the Awatere Valley Road to finish on the steep Medway hill. The return mass start/sealed handicap stage is usually ridden at high pace back down the valley and then climbs back over the hills to finish back at the Montana Winery. The hard course and windy conditions usually sees a great battle for fastest time between scratch riders. Riders favoured for time honours are Gerard van Antwerpen, Tony Catterick, Brody Catterick, Conway Taylor, Jeremy McKenzie and Josh Scott.
Riders are to assemble opposite Montana Winery at 1pm for a 1.30pm start (normal front markers will start 10-15minutes earlier).
The junior under 17 grade riders will also ride a two stage event. The first 20km stage starts at Dumgree Road and finishes at the Medway and stage two returns back to Dumgree Road. Fastest time will be fought out between Callum Saunders, Quinn Karwowski and Nick Blakiston. Under 17 riders are to meet at their venue at 1.30pm for a 2pm start.

Whatamongrel Test

Friday, March 11th, 2011
Competition is expected to be close in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Whatamango 3 stage event from Blenheim to Whatamango and return, tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 64km event starts with a 27km massed start stage from Blenheim to Picton with the top riders trying to get some time advantage over the Elevation climb into Picton to finish in Kent Street. Stage two is a 10km individual time trial from Waikawa to the top of the gruelling climb up the Whatamango Hill which overlooks Port Underwood. The final stage returns from Picton to Blenheim with 3 time bonus sprintsalong the way, which definately come into play if there is a close classification after stage two. After last weeks event Josh Scott would be favoured for fastest time with Gerard van Antwerpen, Lee Griggs, Brent Ackroyd, Glen Bateman and Antony Clark fighting out the minor placings. Each stage also carries sealed handicap points towards the handicap trophy.
The Junior under 17 grade will compete in a two stage event for the Redwood Fisheries Cup over stage one and three courses of the open event.
All riders are to assemble at the Research Centre at 12.30pm sharp for a 1pm start.

Blakiston and Karwowski Take Wins

Saturday, July 17th, 2010
Consistent riding saw Joe Blakiston take the Vincent Shield in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s opening day of the winter season at Renwick on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 32km handicap event was ridden in cool damp conditions over 4 laps of the Condors Bend/Renwick block. The 15 minute front markers of Blakiston and Denis Church teamed well and were never headed with Blakiston taking the final surge to the line from Church. Only 40 seconds back Mike McManaway (off 7m) sprinted in Mike Murphy (off 5m), Glen Herkt (off 5m) and new rider Lee Griggs (off 7m) for third place. Fastest time was fought out between the 4 remaining scratch riders with Gerard van Antwerpen heading off Jono Lee, Tony Catterick and Brent Harris.
The junior under 17 grade rode over 2 laps of the circuit (16km) for the Opening Day Cup. The 2 minute break riders Quinn Karwowski and Leatham Landon-Lane rode strongly to be only 34 seconds down on the scratch riders and were rewarded with a fine win to Karwowski with Landon-Lane 14 seconds adrift in second place. Scratch riders Callum Saunders and Will Hart sprinted in for third place with Saunders taking the fastest time honours.

Clark Wins Curtis Piper Memorial 4 Stage

Saturday, March 6th, 2010
The final 2 stages of the Curtis Piper Memorial 4 stage event at Renwick saw only 16 seconds separating the top 5 riders, the 5km Stage 3  hill time trial into the Delta Lake was to be a real test. Antony Clark (9m 53s) rode a good time to move into the lead over Grant Ludemann (10m 05s) and Max Pendleton (10m 25s). The handicap section was won by Clark from Mary Lister and Ludemann.
The final 50km stage from the Delta to Wairau Valley township and return to Conders Bend Road saw the riders encounter strong headwinds on the return journey. At this stage Clark had a 12s and 24s lead over Ludemann and Pendleton respectively. The whole field stayed intact with the sprint finish going to Pendleton over Craig Murphy and Ludemann.
Even with sprint bonuses in the final stage Clark won the Curtis Piper Memorial Cup by 12s from Ludemann and just 4s back to Pendleton in third place. The Grosvenor Trophy for handicap went to Mary Lister on 16pt from Mike McManaway 16pt and Mike Murphy 13pt.
The junior under 17 event overall result saw Nick Blakiston take first place and fastest time honours.
A separate open 50km event was held over the open course with Gerard van Antwerpen taking line honours over Marty Bruce and Brent Ackroyd in the final sprint.

Rowing, cycling dominate

Two sports continue to scoop top awards

RIDING HIGH: Cyclist Cameron Karwowski, flanked by proud parents Julian and Robyn, displays the Most Promising Under-21 Sportsperson of the Year Trophy.

Rowing and cycling continued their remarkable dominance of the awards at last night’s Marlborough Express Blenheim Round Table Sportsperson of the Year awards dinner.

While Wairau rower Duncan Grant took home the night’s major award as Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year for 2009, track cyclist Cameron Karwowski was named the Blenheim Round Table Most Promising Under-21 Sportsperson of the Year.

Grant’s honour marked the third time he has won the award and the fourth straight year rowing has taken the top prize.

A rower or cyclist has now been recognised as Marlborough’s top sporting achiever for the past 11 years since Robin Reid won the award in 1999.

Reid also won in 2004, while fellow cyclists Jason Allen (2000, 2005), Mark Inglis (2001) and Justin Leov (2003) have also claimed the honour.

Rowers to win in the 11-year span are Grant (2009, 2007, 2006), Joseph Sullivan (2008) and Rob Hellstrom (2002).

Marlborough Basketball’s Jacqueline Taylor was named the Sport Marlborough Sports Administrator of the Year.

A sellout crowd of 360 sports fans packed Marlborough Lines Stadium for the annual awards dinner, and were entertained by Air New Zealand Cup guest speaker rower Mahe Drysdale. Drysdale, who almost missed the event when his flight out of London was cancelled, gave a forthright account of his thoughts and feelings at last year’s Beijing Olympics where he won a bronze medal despite battling illness.

He spoke of his journey from a 116kg office worker to world champion rower, achieving his dream of making the Olympics and what motivates him to remain at the top.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman kept the night running smoothly as master of ceremonies.

However, the night belonged to Grant.

In Poznan, Poland, in August, he became just the fourth New Zealander to complete a hat-trick of world titles when he took out the lightweight single sculls crown, winning by more than a second.

His efforts saw him named New Zealand Rower of the Year.

However, even that honour didn’t mean he was a certainty to earn his sport’s nomination for last night’s event.

2008 Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year, Picton’s Sullivan, and Wairau rower Robbie Manson combined to win the world under-23 double sculls title and must have received serious consideration for rowing’s nod.

Grant gave special credit to that crew and said the competition within the New Zealand rowing squads was one of the things that drove them to be the best.

Grant said he faced a busy year as he builds toward the 2010 world champs at Lake Karapiro where he hopes to emulate Drysdale’s feat of four world titles.

With the lightweight single not an Olympic event, Grant said his focus would then shift to either the lightweight pair or four with an aim to make the 2012 Olympic team.

Karwowski’s day started in hail and cold in Invercargill, but finished with a perfect sunny Marlborough glow after taking the under-21 honour.

Last year, the 18-year-old made the tough decision to base himself in Invercargill to train at the city’s world-class velodrome.

That choice paid off as he teamed up with Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster to take out the men’s team sprint at the UCI World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Moscow in August.

“Last year I had to decide whether I wanted to be a uni student and live that life, or take a risk and go for it in cycling and try and achieve my dream of making the New Zealand team. I did that and a lot more,” Karwowski said.

After his success in track sprint events, Karwowski said he planned to shift his focus back to his original strength of longer track rides and had just returned from attending a Bike NZ elite endurance camp.

With numerous top cyclists in the sprint events, Karwowski said he felt his pathway to elite level could be blocked and he would focus on the omnium, where he placed eighth at the junior worlds, despite limited practice.

Taylor won the administrators’ award from three other nominees. A tireless worker in the Marlborough Basketball office, Taylor is a key organiser of senior and junior basketball competitions and played a leading role in the smooth running of the Marlborough Basketball Association’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Taylor Rides To NZ Title At National Club Champs

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Conway Taylor added another New Zealand title to the Cuddon Cycling Marlborough list, winning masters one men’s honours at the national club road cycling championships near Nelson yesterday.

In a Marlborough one-two finish, Taylor headed home fellow Cuddon club member Chris Heywood by 36 seconds. He clocked 35 minutes 35 seconds on the undulating, 25-kilometre Upper Moutere course.

Heywood took silver by a second from Pegasus Cycling Club member Nigel Pink.

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough picked up a second title when Rhonda Murphy was unchallenged in taking masters one women’s honours.

Ray Dunstan placed second in a fast masters three mens race, clocking 34.06, while Callum Saunders was fourth in the under-15 boys. Marlborough’s Bronwen Frazer successfully defended her national title in the senior women’s time trial. Now riding for the Nelson Star and Garter Wheelers club, Frazer clocked 36.12, five seconds clear of Gabrielle Vermunt of Southland, defending the title she won in Wanganui last year as a member of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough.

Former Marlborough rider Robin Reid saw the host club complete a senior title double when he took out the 40km senior men’s time trial in 52.45min. In a closely fought ride, Reid finished eight seconds clear of Hamilton City’s Justin Kerr, with double Olympian Chris Nicholson (Star and Garter) third. Reid recorded the day’s third fastest time overall, trailing under-23 riders Sam Horgan and Alex McGregor.

Horgan upset his more senior rivals to score the day’s fastest time and take under-23 honours with an impressive 51.49min.

The club nationals continue with road races today.
