Windy TT For Track Club Champs

Riders encountered windy conditions in the first evening of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s club track championships at Athletic Park last Monday evening.
Callum Saunders was easily the quickest rider in the 1000m time trial when he recorded 1m 14.40s to take the Junior Under 19 title over Nick Blakiston (1m 22.09s). Masters rider Glen Herkt (1m 21.47s) took the Senior title over Andy Petrie (1m 23.75s) and Gerard van Antwerpen (1m 24.81s). The Junior Under 17 500m time trial was won by Quinn Karwowski (37.77s) in a good time for the conditions. Saunders also won the open ‘miss and out’ and 8000m scratch events whilst Graham Henderson was the other most consistent rider to take third in both those events.
The previous week’s track evening also saw Saunders in good form with three first places and a second place. Nick Blakiston recorded two second placings whilst Gerard van Antwerpen had a second and two third placings.

Visiting Rider Wright Dominates

Visiting rider Hamish Wright of Tinwald certainly spiced things up with some good results at Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s track meeting at Athletic Park last Monday evening.
Wright dominated the local field by winning his heat and the final of the 500m scratch event and then went on to win the ‘Miss and Out’ and was second in the 8000m event. Other winners on the night were Glen Herkt (800m handicap) and Quinn Karwowski (8000m scratch). Consistency came from Callum Saunders and Nick Blakiston who both had a second and a third placing.

Karwowski Dominant

Track cycling at Athletic Park last Monday evening was again dominated by Quinn Karwowski. Karwowski was impressive in the 500m handicap where he recorded another good time of 36.83s from the scratch mark for the win. He also won the 1000m rolling start, the Miss and Out and the 8000m rolling start. Gerard van Antwerpen won the 1600m handicap and recorded three second placings and a third placing whilst Leatham Landon-Lane scored a second placing and three third placings.

Close Competition At Track

Close competition carried on at last Monday’s track evening at Athletic Park with a good spread of placings. The longer events, the 8000m scratch and the 4000m points race, saw wins to Gerard van Antwerpen. Glen Herkt continued his consistent form with three second placings and Matt Straker shone with two third place efforts. Quinn Karwowski won his heat of the 500m rolling start event and then sped away to the Final victory in 35.62 seconds. The 800m handicap event saw Larry Kendall (105m) just holding off Herkt (50m) and Karwowski (scratch) in a grandstand finish.

Karwowski Flying

On Monday evening at Athletic Park the junior under 17 riders continued their domination of the early season. After Callum Saunders taking four wins last week, Quinn Karwowski repeated this effort winning the 500m handicap, 1000m scratch, Miss and Out, and 8000m scratch. His effort in the 500m handicap was particularly noteworthy with a scorching time of 35.67s from the scratch mark. Consistent rides came from Gerard van Antwerpen (2 seconds and 2 thirds), Glen Herkt (a second and a third), and Letham Landon-Lane (a second and a third).

Slick Saunders On Track

The opening of the track season got underway at Athletic Park last Monday evening with encouraging numbers. Junior under 17 rider Callum Saunders was impressive, cruising to 3 wins in the 1000m scratch, Miss and Out, and 8000m scratch events. Other consistent riders on the night were Gerard van Antwerpen with two seconds and a fourth placing and Glen Herkt with a second, third, and fourth placing.

Marlborough Boys Strike Gold In Team Sprint

Marlborough boys Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski struck gold at the Rabodirect Age Group National Track Championships at the ILT Velodrome in Invercargill on Friday evening.
After Karwowski’s bronze medal on Tuesday and Saunders consistent performances just outside the medals during the week, the boys combined with Cameron Ford (Nelson) as Tasman’s junior under 17 sprint team. The opening round saw Tasman (50.888s) as top qualifiers over Mid-South Canterbury (51.011s). The final was electrifying with the Tasman boys taking a great win in 50.758s over a close Mid-South Canterbury at 50.777s. Aucland (51.565s) took third place over Canterbury (52.787s).
The final day of the championships on Saturday saw the junior under 17 boys competing in the sprints. The qualifying round placed Karwowski 6th, Ford 7th, Liam Julian (Nelson) 9th and Saunders 10th. The first round saw Karwowski, Julian and Saunders proceed but were all put out in the quarter finals. The ride off for 5th-8th place was taken by Saunders (5th), Julian (7th) and Karwowski (8th).
The Tasman team finished off their successful week on Saturday evening with Michaela Kerr (Nelson) taking Bronze in the junior under 15 girls scratch race, and Nelson’s Kristoff Ford, Daniel Ellison and Sean Hambrook taking bronze in the junior under sprint team event.   

Medals At National Track Champs

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s junior under 17 rider Quinn Karwowski, representing the Tasman Centre, made a great start at the Rabodirect Age Group National Track Cycling Championships, in Invercargill , when he picked up a bronze medal in the 500m time trial event on Tuesday.
Not rated up with the favorites Karwowski sped around the ILT velodrome to record third equal time of 35.415s with Alex Hooper of Mid-South Canterbury. The major placings went to Southland’s Michael Culling (34.897s) and Auckland’s Chad Elliston (34.924s). Marlborough’s Callum Saunders was 7th in 35.750s. Tasman carried on their sucess with Daniel Ellison (Nelson) taking third place in the junior under 19 sprints and Warwick Spence (Nelson) winning the Gold in the Masters 1 10km scratch race. Later in the evening session Saunders rode well for 4th place in the junior under 17 Points race.
Yesterday Ellison continued his good form to win Gold in the Junior under 19 Keirin event whilst the consistent Saunders was 5th in the Junior under 17 7.5km Scratch race.
The Rabodirect Age Group Championships will finish on Saturday. The Marlborough youngsters will be looking to follow in the footsteps and sucess of Marlborough riders at the Rabodirect Elite Championships in Invercargill last week where Jason Allen riding for Tasman took Golds in the Individual Pursuit and Scratch race and Bronzes in the Points Race and Omnium events. Former Junior World Team Sprint Champion, Cameron Karwowski (Southland) took Silver medals in the Individual Pursuit, Time Trial and Omnium events whilst Elijah May (Canterbury) took a Silver medals in the Sprints and Keirin events.  

Taylor Takes Track Titles

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s club track championships continued at Athletic Park last Monday evening with Conway Taylor winning the 8000m scratch event for the Gary Langridge Memorial Cup.
The open grade event was ridden at a good pace with Gerard van Antwerpen attempting two breakaways in the latter stages which were unsuccessful. Taylor took the event in the final sprint from van Antwerpen and Andrew Jamieson. Earlier in the evening Warren Hall dominated with wins in the 1000m scratch and 800m handicap events whilst van Antwerpen won the miss and out event.
The previous weeks track evening saw Taylor retain the club individual pursuit title, over 3000m, with a good time in the windy conditions of 3m 56.45s. The minor placings went to van Antwerpen (4m 14.79s) and Glen Herkt (4m 18.57s). The junior under 17 2000m pursuit title went to Callum Saunders in 2m 39.4s over Quinn Karwowski (2m 48.35s) and Nick Blakiston (2m 48.43s).

Track Titles To Saunders, Taylor and Sloan

Good conditions saw good times and close competition as Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s club track championships continued at Athletic Park last Monday evening.
The junior under 17 grade 500m time trial saw every rider post personal bests, with Callum Saunders rocketing around the track to record a 36.32 seconds. The minor placings went to Quinn Karwowski (37.98s) and Nick Blakiston (40.21s). The open grade 1000m time trial saw Conway Taylor cruise to victory with a time of 1m 15.20s over Conal Sloan (1m 18.74s) and Finbar McCloy (1m 22.24s).
The semi final of the open grade sprints saw Conway Taylor go to the final with two straight wins over Finbar McCloy. Conal Sloan went straight through to the final by default to Glen Herkt. The final couldn’t have been any closer with Sloan taking two straight rides by inches, over Taylor, to win the title. McCloy automatically took third place.
Saunders also took wins on the night in the ‘miss and out’ over Karwowski and Warren Hall, and the 8000m over Gerard van Antwerpen and Karwowski.
This evening riders will compete in the club championship pursuit events and the junior under 17 grade will also compete for the Neville Hill Cup over 1600m.
