Good Times On Final TT Evening

Cool and damp conditions didn’t deter the enthusiasm of riders on the final evening of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Cycle World time trial series, when excellent times were recorded.
The course from Wither Hills Winery on New Renwick Road to Fromm Winery on Godfreys Road and return saw several personal best times and a new Masters 55-59 years record to Ryan Lock (22m 23s) lowering the old mark held by Martin Fletcher by 9 seconds. Fastest rider was Ray Dunstan (20m 26s) who was just 2 seconds outside his own Masters 50-54 years record. The minor placings went to Conway Taylor (20m 54s) and Jimmy Shapcott (21m 10s). Other notable personal best times on the night were Brent Ackroyd and junior under 17 rider Callum Saunders who both recorded 23m 01s for 7th equal place.
The sealed handicap went to Will Hart by 14 seconds to Nick Blakiston with Lock another 10 seconds back in third place.

Comfortable Win For Tuckerman

Aaron Tuckerman who is currently back from the United States, cleaned up in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s criterium events at the Blenheim go kart track last Wednesday evening.
The initial event was a one lap time trial with Jamie Hawke coming out a clear winner on 1m 18s. The minor placings went to Brent Ackroyd (1m 21s) with Tom Francis, Ethan Roach and Conway Taylor all on 1m 22s for 3rd equal. A 5 lap handicap event saw Roger Golding (off 1m 20s) clear out from the front group and win by a comfortable 12 seconds to Tuckerman (off scatch) and Hawke (off scratch) who had come right through the large field. The main event of the evening was the 10 lap ‘A’ grade event which has sprint points throughout the race. The first of 5 sprints went to Roach from Hawke and Andrew Jamieson. After that Tuckerman moved through and formed a break with Hawke and Francis. Francis had an unlucky spill when his tyre rolled and hawke took the next sprint from Tuckerman with Taylor chasing in third. Tuckerman then just comfotably rode away and controlled the race to win by 1 point to Hawke (17pt) and Taylor (9pt). A ‘B’ grade event over 4 laps saw youngster Nathan McIntyre have a clean sweep on the sprints to win on 20pt from Golding (9pt) and Stuart Curnow (9pt) in third place. 

McCarthy Smashes Old Record

Records continued to tumble at Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Cycle World time trial No4 last Wednesday evening when Caroline McCarthy smashed the Womens 45+ record by 2 minutes 29 seconds. A good field took part on the 15.2km course from Wither Hills Winery on New Renwick Road to Fromm Winery on Godfreys Road and return. Ray Dunstan (20m 24s) was the fastest rider of the night creating a new Masters 50-54 record and a personal best by 4 seconds. Conway Taylor (20m 57s) was second with Josh Scott (21m 00s) riding a personal best for third place. A new record also went to Ian Shapcott (23m 40s) in the Masters 60-64 division. McCarthy’s excellent time of 25m 12s broke a long standing record of 27m 41s set by Judith Saxton in January 2001. Three Records Topple In TT

Three records toppled at Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Cycle World time trial No3 at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
The 15.2 km event on the New Renwick Road/Godfreys Road out and return course drew a good field with almost perfect conditions. A close tussle amongst the top riders saw Jono Lee record a personal best of 20m 54s to head off newcomer to Blenheim Tom Franciss (20m 56s) and ray Dunstan (21m 09s). Fourth place and humming along was National club time trial champion Bronwen Frazer (21m 38s) who broke her own Womens record, set just 2 weeks ago, by an amazing 1m 01s. Martin Fletcher (22m 32s) lowered his own 55yrs+ record set last February by 16s, whilst Rhonda Murphy (23m 41s) broke her own Womens 35-44yrs record set 4 weeks ago by 12s. The sealed handicap went to Joe Blakiston by just 2 seconds to Stuart Curnow with Andrew Curnow another 9 seconds back in third place.

Windy Conditions For Graded Events

Windy conditions was a big factor in the final results of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s graded racing at Fairhall last wednesday evening.
The ‘A’ grade 41km event started at Wither Hills Winery and covered 4 laps of the Benmorven circuit before finishing up the Ridge Resort hill. The front group whittled down to 5 riders into the finish with Brendan Neylon taking line honours from Conway Taylor, Gerard van Antwerpen, Ethan Roach and Richard Anderson. The ‘B’ grade 32km event covered 3 laps of Benmorven with the front group breaking up in the final stages. Andrew Curnow rocketed up the final climb to finish 51 seconds clear of Martin Fletcher and Brent Ackroyd. The’C’ grade also covered 3 laps with Roger Golding taking victory by 8 seconds to Joe Blakiston with Stuart Curnow another minute down in third place.

Frazer Betters Record

National club time trial champion Bronwen Frazer smashed her own Womens record by 11 seconds in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Bike HQ time trial No2 at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
After a rainy day and cool conditions, only a handfull of riders were able to improve on their previous time over the New Renwick Rd/Godfrey Rd 15.2km course. Ray Dunstan was the fastest rider of the night with a good time of 20m 46s just 18sec outside of his Masters 45-54yr record. Second place went to Jono Lee (21m 53s) with Frazer (22m 28s) taking a good third placing. The sealed handicap honours went to junior under 15 rider Quinn Karwowski (6m) 20m 31s from Callum Saunders (4m) 20m 40s with Joe Blakiston (7m 20s) 20m 43s in third place.

Van Antwerpen Victory

The first event of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s ‘summernite’ road racing saw good numbers competing on the Benmorven circuit last Wednesday.
The ‘A’ grade event over 40km covered 4 laps of Benmorven and then finished on the flat into the ridge Resort. Strong riding in the windy conditions saw a good time of 59m 03s recorded. Splits in the front group appeared in the latter stages with Gerard van Antwerpen taking a close sprint finish from Richard Anderson. Just 7 seconds back Chris Heywood edged out Jamie Hawke for third place.
The ‘B’ grade event covered 3 laps (31km) with the field of 18 riders whittling down to 8 for the final sprint home. A tight finish saw junior under 17 rider Callum Saunders head off Craig Murphy and Andrew Gifford.
The small ‘C’ grade event also covered 3 laps with Stu Curnow taking line honours from Julie Fry and Hugo Smith.

Murphy On A Mission

     Rhonda  Murphy was fired up whe she smashed the Womens 35-44yrs record in the        first evening of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Bike HQ Time Trial series at Fairhall last Wednesday. The 15.2km time trial event covers a course from Wither Hills Winery along New Renwick Rd and Godfreys Rd to Fromm Winery and return. A large field met unusual conditions over the course with head and tail winds on both outward an return journeys. The fastest time of the evening was recorded by junior under 19 rider Jono Lee with a excellent time of 21m 02s. Seasoned campaigners Ray Dunstan (21m 27s) and Paul Johnson (21m 52s) took second and third place respectively. Murphy was the fastest Woman (9th place) at 23m 53s, breaking the record by 12 seconds set by Suzie Aviss in 2007. The sealed handicap section winner was junior under 17 rider Ethan Roach who recorded 5th fastest time overall (22m 27s) to be 26 seconds clear of Murphy and another 14 seconds to Mason Spiers in third place.
