Junior under 17 rider Callum Saunders had the edge on his rivals to take out both stages of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Summernite Series, Cycle World Stage Race No2 at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
The first 12km stage from Wither Hills Winery covered a course from New Renwick Road into Brancott Road, finishing on the hill at the end of the Wrekin Road. Ten riders still remained in the front group until the last kilometre when Saunders edged out Lee Griggs, Quinn Karwowski and Gerard van Antwerpen by 1 second in the sprint to the line. The second and final 14km stage started in Brancott Road, turned in Godfreys Road to finish back at the Wither Hills Winery. The quick speed at the turn saw nine riders go clear on the run home. The long sprint in saw Saunders take a close finish from van Antwerpen and Brent Ackroyd, with Karwowski and Graham Henderson a few seconds back.
The overall result was a win to Saunders by 1 second to van Antwerpen and another 3 seconds to Karwowski in third place. The sealed handicap on the night went to Nick Blakiston (2m) by 10 seconds to Glen Herkt (2m) and just another 1 second to Henderson (2m 15s) in third place.

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011Jeremy McKenzie finished strongly to take the win in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Summernite Series, Cycle World graded race No2 at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
The ‘A’ grade 44km event covered 4 laps of the Benmorven circuit and then finished in the Ridge Resort. On a very warm and windy night the field stayed intact until the climb up the Ridge Resort hill when McKenzie applied the pressure and rode away to take the win on the descent by 12 seconds over Lee Griggs and Gerard van Antwerpen who dead heated for second. Andrew Jamieson, Leatham Landon-Lane and Brent Ackroyd finished another 30 seconds back respectively.
The ‘B’ grade 35km event covered 3 laps of the Benmorven circuit and also finished at the Ridge Resort. Five riders rode away in the latter stages of the race with Will Hart and Craig Murphy being to strong on the climb to take first and second place respectively. Glen Herkt and Graham Henderson were 19 seconds back in third and fourth place whilst Ben Verhoef took 5th place a further 19 seconds down. Joe Blakiston took the ‘C’ grade win.

New TT Record To Dunstan
Wednesday, November 16th, 2011Ray Dunstan showed good form at Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Summernite Series, Cycle World Time Trial No2, last Wednesday evening, when he broke his own 50-54yrs record by 4 seconds.
The riders enjoyed a good tailwind on the outward journey of the New Renwick Road course, with the wind dropping slightly on the return to the finish at Wither Hills Winery. Dunstan was on fire to record a quick time of 20m 20s which was 38 seconds faster than his first effort of the series, three weeks ago. Junior under 19 rider Brodie Catterick impressed with a 21m 31s for second place, whilst the consistent Gerard van Antwerpen (21m 56s) was third. Georgia Catterick (25m 39s) established a new Junior Under 15 Girls record with an incredible time 31 seconds faster than the current Junior Under 17 Womens record. The sealed handicap went to Craig Anderson by 9 seconds to Brodie Catterick and another 27 seconds to Rhonda Murphy (fastest Women) in third place.

First Stage Event To Brodie Catterick
Wednesday, November 9th, 2011Junior under 19 rider Brodie Catterick was consistent to win Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Summernite Cycle World Stage Race No1 at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
The riders encountered warm and wet conditions and competed in a 6km, 11km and 10km stage. Stage one followed a course from Wither Hills Winery to Paynters Road, Benmorven Road and finished up the Morven Lane climb. The whole field almost remained intact until the climb when Catterick took the win from Callum Saunders and Jeremy McKenzie. Stage two completed the Benmorven circuit, went into the Ridge Resort and then finished on the Fairbourne Drive climb. The stage was a win for junior under 17 rider Quinn Karwowski, over Saunders and Catterick. The final stage took the riders out to Godfreys Road before turning to finish back at Wither Hills Winery. With the field splitting at the turn, six riders were clear to contest the sprint home. Karwowski was again prominent to win from Gerard van Antwerpen and McKenzie.
The overall classification went to Catterick by 4 seconds to McKenzie and another 8 seconds to van Antwerpen. The sealed handicap was extremely close with only 4 second separating the first five riders. McKenzie (20s) won by 2 seconds to Graham Henderson (2m30s), another 1 second to Ray Dustan (30s), and another 1 second to Leatham Landon-Lane (1m) and Ben Verhoef (2m30s).

Tony Catterick Takes Windy Win
Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011Tony Catterick sprinted in to take line honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s summernite series Cycle World graded race No1 at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
Conditions were extremely tough for the riders with strong winds on the course starting at Wither Hills Winery and covering laps of the Benmorven circuit before finishing into the Ridge Resort. The ‘A’ grade 41km event covered 4 laps with the leading 8 riders breaking up in the last few kilometres. Catterick just headed off Gerard van Antwerpen for the win with Brodie Catterick 5 seconds back in third place. The ‘B’ grade 32km event covering 3 laps saw 7 riders finish together with Junior under 17 rider Nick Blakiston taking the sprint from Craig Murphy and Michelle Catterick. Georgia Catterick completed a good ride to take the ‘C’ grade event.

First Summernite TT Under Belt For Dunstan
Wednesday, October 26th, 2011Ray Dunstan kept up his impressive time trial record with another convincing win in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s summernite series, Cycle World Time Trial No1, at Fairhall last Wednesday evening.
The opening 16km event drew a small field of hardened riders in the cool and wet conditions on the out and return New Renwick Road course from Wither Hills Winery. With a dead road, but little wind, Dunstan sped over the course to record a good 20m 58s which was only 34 seconds outside his Masters 50-54yrs record. The consistent Gerard van Antwerpen (22m 31s) and Andrew Jamieson (23m 10s) took second and third places respectively. The sealed handicap was extremely close with Graham Henderson taking the win by 1 second from van Antwerpen and just another 6 seconds to the fastest Women, Rhonda Murphy.

Van Antwerpen Takes Double Again
Saturday, October 15th, 2011Gerard van Antwerpen took his second consecutive first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s final event of the Winter season at Fairhall hall on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 40km handicap event was ridden in cold and wet conditions twice over the Benmorven, Ridge Resort, Godfreys Road course. As the field closed up all the action happened in the final lap. The scratch pair of Lee Griggs and van Antwerpen went through the middle markers and were in pursuit of the 17 minute front markers Denis Church and Joe Blakiston. The leading pair were caught just 1.5km from home with van Antwerpen taking line honours in the sprint from Griggs. Blakiston headed in Church, 27 seconds later, to take third place.

Last Winter Event & Juniors Race In Yunca Tour Of Southland
Friday, October 14th, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough will hold their final event of winter from Fairhall tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade and junior under 17 grade will combine in a 43km handicap event covering two laps of the Benmoven, Ridge Resort, Godfreys Road course. The consistent Gerard van Antwerpen will be favoured for time honours with his main competition likely to come from Jeremy McKenzie, Josh Scott, Andrew Jamieson, Ray Dunstan, Tony Catterick and Brody Catterick.
All riders are to assemble at Fairhall hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Meanwhile, junior riders Leatham Landon-Lane, Callum Saunders, Nick Blakiston and Quinn Karwowski will compete in the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland starting today and finishing on Sunday. On Monday, Saunders will take part in a training camp as part of the National junior under 19 track squad at the ILT Velodrome. The boys will the go on to compete at the ILT Track Cycling Festival from Wednesday to Friday.
Van Antwerpen Victory In Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy
Saturday, October 8th, 2011Scratch rider Gerard van Antwerpen timed his finish perfectly to take first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy event at Okaramio last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 50km handicap event covered a course out to Havelock, and over the Mahakipawa hill to almost Linkwater and return. After a tailwind on the outward journey the riders were tested with cold and wet conditions on the homeward leg. The nine minute markers of Dave Hutchison, Martin Fletcher, Graham Henderson and Frank Marfell worked well together to hit the front at Havelock on the return trip. At Rocky Creek (6km to go) the four were just 300m ahead of scratch markers Van Antwerpen and Lee Griggs, and Mike Murphy (off 5m). With 1km to go the catch was made with a Van Antwerpen attack which saw him ride clear for the win. The close sprint for the minor placings saw Fletcher lead out to hold off Henderson, Murphy and Griggs respectively.

Okaramio Hotel Challenge for Locals and Juniors Head North
Friday, October 7th, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade riders will compete for the Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy from Okaramio tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 50km handicap event covers a rolling course out to Havelock, and then over the Mahakipawa hill to almost Linkwater and return. The past winners have usually come from strong rides over the Mahakipawa climbs and then holding off the fast finishing back markers over the final 15km from Havelock to Okaramio. Normal scratch markers Gerard van Antwerpen and Andrew Jamieson will be joined by Lee Griggs, Paul Newman, Brent Ackroyd, Antony Clark and David Craig on the scratch mark in their pursuit for fastest time honours.
The majority of the local junior cyclists are travelling North this weekend to compete in the National Schools Cycling Championships in Levin, Palmerston North and Fielding. The riders Leatham Landon-Lane, Peter Crampton, Callum Saunders, Quinn Karwowski and Nick Blakiston will compete in the Sir Bernard Fergusson team time trials on Saturday. On Sunday Saunders will take part in the Tour of Manawatu whilst the other riders compete in road events, and Monday all will ride in points races on the Manfield raceway.
Local riders are to assemble at the Okaramio Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
