Van Antwerpen Retains Squire Cup

Saturday, August 1st, 2009
Gerard van Antwerpen’s experience showed when he sprinted in to retain the Ray Squire Memorial in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Troubador Trophy event at Rapaura last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 70km massed start event covering six laps of the lower Rapaura circuit got off to a quick start with 25 riders still intact at the end of the first lap. An attack by Tony Catterick and Chris Heywood on lap two dwindled the front group to 19 and the later to a stable 13 riders. Van Antwerpen broke out of the bunch approximately 300m from the finish with only Kevin Bishell staying with him. Van Antwerpen won by a bike length to Bishell with 3 seconds back to Jamie Hawke who just headed off Heywood and Catterick in the group finish. The Troubador Trophy for the handicap win again saw Denis Church (off 30m) in the winning seat after teaming up with Lisa McManaway. Church won by just 42 seconds over Todd Neal (1m 30s), with Jamie Kidd (1m 30s) and Marcel Mulder (1m 30s) third equal.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 35km massed start over 3 laps of the open circuit. The duel between the top two riders went right to the line with Callum Saunders just edging out Ethan Roach in a close finish. Just over 3 minutes back Will Hart pressured his rivals over the latter stages to take third place by 6 seconds to Quinn Karwowski and another 9 seconds back to Nick Blakiston and Sonia Ginders. The Troubador Trophy for the sealed handicap win went to Karwowski by a good margin of 56 seconds to Hart and another 15 seconds to Blakiston in third place.

Strong Competition For Squire Cup/Troubador Trophy

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

A large field is expected for Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Troubador Trophy and Ray Squire Memorial Cup event at Rapaura tomorrow afternoon.

The open grade 70km massed start/sealed handicap event covers 6 laps of the Rapaura circuit taking in Hammerichs Road, Old Renwick Rd, O’Dwyers Rd and Rapaura Road. The Squire Cup for fastest time will see past winners Kevin Bishell (1988, 2002 and 2003) and Gerard van Antwerpen (2008) trying to repeat their efforts. Up to a dozen riders could remain in the front group for time honours with a possibility that Robin Reid’s 1998 record of 1hr 36m 15s might be broken. The Troubador Trophy for handicap will see past winners Graham Henderson (1979), Denis Church (1993), Van Antwerpen (1997), Gill Painter (1999, 2008), Rene de Ruiter (2000), Jamie Kidd (2001), and Glen Herkt (2004, 2005) all in contention.
The junior under 17 grade 35km massed start/sealed handicap  will run over 3laps of the open course with the Troubador Trophy going to the handicap winner. Ethan Roach and Callum Saunders are expected to be dominant in the time stakes.
All riders are to assemble at the Rapaura Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Solid Smith Takes Whatamango 3 Stage

Saturday, July 25th, 2009
Consistent riding by Wayne Smith lead to victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Whatamango 3 stage event last Saturday.
The open grade 64km 3 stage event started off with a 27km massed start stage from Blenheim to Picton. The majority of the field was still together at the Elevation climb and eleven riders contested the sprint to the line. The return to the club of Irish rower Sean O’Neill saw him take the stage from Jono Lee, Brent Ackroyd, Todd Neal and Gerard van Antwerpen. Ackroyd took the sealed handicap points from Martin Fletcher and Neal. Stage two was the gruelling 10km time trial from Waikawa Bay to the top of the Whatamango hill overlooking Port Underwood. Lee was in good form to record a time of 26m 07s almost 4 minutes ahead of his nearest rival. Wayne Smith (30m 04s) and Stephen Rooney (30m 16s) took the minor placings. The sealed handicap points easily went to Denis Church from Smith with Lee and Rene de Ruiter in third equal place.
Three other riders who were unable to start the first stage rode good times on the climb. Richard Anderson is definately one to watch for the future when he scorched over the course in 23 minutes 54 seconds which was just 28 seconds outside the late David Duff’s amazing record (23m 26s) set in 1988. The other times were Jamie Hawke (25m 32s), and Jamie Kidd (28m 47s). Junior under 17 rider Ethan Roach also recorded a good 27m 14s.
The final 27km massed start stage back to Blenheim saw Lee clearly in the lead with sprint time bonuses possibly deciding the difference in the minor placings. The Elevation climb left eight riders in the front group. Lee unfortunately punctured halfway home which robbed him of a good win. The sprint for line honours went to David Craig from Smith and Neal. The sealed handicap went to Fletcher from Church and Smith.
With time bonuses not altering the result Smith took the fastest time trophy for the overall classification by 12 seconds to Rooney with another 29 seconds to Neal in third place. The overall handicap points were close with Fletcher taking the trophy on 11pts on countback from Church 11pt and Ackroyd 11pt.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 2 stage event to Picton and return over 54km for the Redwood Fisheries Cup. The usual scratch riders were dominant in the first stage with Roach just heading off Callum Saunders in the sprint to the line. Will Hart was third just ahead of Nick Blakiston. The sealed handicap points went to Roach, saunders and Blakiston. The final stage was a replica of the open race with the lead rider Roach puncturing. Saunders was well clear of his nearest rivals to take the stage. The minor placings were taken by Hart, Leatham Landon-Lane and Blakiston. The sealed handicap was won by Landon-Lane from Blakiston and Hart.
The overall time classification went to Saunders from Hart and Blakiston. The handicap cup went to Blakiston on 9pt from Landon-Lane 8pt and saunders 8pt.

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
The Whatamango hill will be a real test for Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders as they compete in the Whatamango 3 stage Trophies event tomorrow.

The final 27km stage back to Blenheim from Nelson Square, Picton gives riders a chance to gain time bonuses with sprints at Koromiko, Tuamarina and the finish. The handicap trophy will go to the rider with the most points on sealed handicap over the event.

Reid Triumphant In Henderson TT

Saturday, July 18th, 2009
Former National time trial champion Robin Reid was a convincing winner in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Henderson Bros. Cups time trial event last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 51.5km time trial course from Renwick to Havelock and return was unfortunately changed due to a motor accident. However, the riders competed over three and a half laps of the SH6, Old Renwick Road, Jacksons Road and Rapaura road block. Reid rode a good time on the circuit of 1hr 10m 41s to claim the Henderson Bros. Cup for the fifth time (1995, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2009) to equal Kevin Bishells record of wins in 1983, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1994. Ray Dunstan showed his buildup to the World Masters time trial championships in Austria in August is going well by recording second place at 1hr 12m 27s. Other minor placings went to Conway Taylor (1hr 15m 35s), Chris Heywood (1hr 19m 39s) and fastest Woman, Reid’s partner, Britta Martin (1hr 21m 59s). The sealed handicap trophy went to Heywood by 48sec to Dunstan with another 1m 07sec back to David Craig in third place.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 16km time trial over the Renwick/Vintage lane block for the Dooley Cup. As predicted Ethan Roach was the victor with a time of 25m 03s. the minor placings went to Callum Saunders (26m 17s) and Will Hart (28m 03s). The sealed handicap went to Hart by 30sec to roach with another 29sec back to saunders in third place.

Reid Back For Henderson TT

Thursday, July 16th, 2009
The Henderson Bros. Cups will be at stake when Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade riders compete in the testing time trial on the undulating course from Renwick to Havelock and return tomorrow afternoon.
The 51.5km event will have added interest as former National time trial champion and Olympian Robin Reid, now residing in Nelson, returns to ride as part of his buildup towards the National Club Championships in Nelson in October. Reid’s amazing record of 66m 53s set in 2003 will stand for many years with himself being the only rider likely to lower it. Masters riders Ray Dunstan and Conway Taylor will again have a close tussle with Josh Scott and Paul Johnson not far behind. The sealed handicap section will also be closely contested with each rider trying to better their expected times.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a 16km time trial over 2 laps of the Renwick/Vintage Lane block. Ethan Roach will be favoured to take the Dooley Cup with Callum Saunders not far off the pace.
All riders are to assemble at Forrest Estate at 1pm for a 1.30pm start. All new riders are welcome.

David Duff Memorial To Taylor

Saturday, July 11th, 2009
A strong sprint finish saw Conway Taylor take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s David Duff Memorial Trophy event at Fairhall last saturday afternoon.
The open grade 56km massed start event drew a good field of 30 riders in the cold conditions. The course covered 4 laps of the large Hawkesbury circuit, starting and finishing at Fairhall hall. After 10km the field was reduced to 20 in the front group.  Attacks over the final lap came to nothing with 18 riders lining up for the final sprint. A long sprint home saw Taylor win by half a bike length from Ray Dunstan and Gerard van Antwerpen. The sealed handicap win went to Rhonda Murphy (12m) who managed to stay in the leading group. The minor placings went to Leonie van den Bergh (24m) and Tony Little (6m).
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 26km massed start event over 2 laps of the small Hawkesbury circuit for the Newport Trophy. Five riders rode clear in the early stages and scratch rider Callum Saunders was unable to shake anyone before the final sprint. Saunders took line honours with Sonia Ginders getting up for second place over Will Hart, Daniel Cresswell and Leatham Landon-Lane. The sealed handicap went to Cresswell (3m 30s) from Landon-Lane (3m) and Ginders (2m 30s).

The open grade 56km massed start/sealed handicap event will cover a course from Fairhall hall and around the large Hawkesbury circuit 4 times and return. The testing course usually sees the field split up in the first 10km with the stronger riders vying for the trophy and the fastest time medals. With an expected 8-10 riders to finish in the front group the favourites would have to be Gerard van Antwerpen, Conway Taylor, Tony Catterick, Kevin Bishell and Jamie Hawke. With medals also at stake in the handicap section, riders will be trying to group to save valuable time.
The junior under 17 grade will race in a 26km massed start/sealed handicap event around the small Hawkesbury circuit twice and return. Good rivalry will be expected again between Ethan Roach and Callum Saunders for the fastest time honours.
All riders are to assemble at Fairhall hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Catterick Dominates

Saturday, July 4th, 2009
Scratch rider Tony Catterick dominated by taking first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade event at Fairhall on saturday afternoon.
The 50km event covered two laps of the Hawkesbury circuit and Benmorven circuit before finishing up the Ridge Resort hill. The cold and wet conditions took its toll on the small field with Catterick and co-marker Gerard van Antwerpen catching the 1m 30s break markers early on and then proceeded to mow down the rest of the field in the latter stages. Catterick was to strong on the hill finish to win by 5 seconds to van Antwerpen with Jamie Kidd (off 1m 30s) and co-marker Grant Ludemann a few seconds back in third and fourth place respectively.
Results:
