Close Racing On Track

Good numbers provided some close results in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s track racing at Athletic Park on Monday evening.
The open grade saw Jono Lee dominant with wins in the 500m time trial and the Points Race. Gerard van Antwerpen won the 1000m scratch and was second in the points race whilst Craig Murphy scored second placings in the 500m time trial and 1000m scratch. It was also good to see Andrew Curnow and Warren Hall back on the track with athird placing each.
The junior under 17 grade saw Callum Saunders take wins in the 500m time trial and 1000m scratch whilst placings were shared around between Will Hart, Nick Blakiston and Quinn Karwowski.

Good Start To Track Season

Gerard van Antwerpen and Callum Saunders were both in good early season form to take three wins each in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s first evening of track racing at Athletic Park on Monday. In the open grade events van Antwerpen won the 1000m scratch, keirin and 8000m scratch. Jono Lee took the 500m handicap and was second in the 1000m and 8000m scratch events. Other prominent riders on the night were Craig Murphy and Graham Henderson who both recorded a second and third placing. The junior under 17 grade saw Saunders take all 3 events plus a third in the open 8000m scratch. Quinn Karwowski had a good night with two seconds and a third placing with Will Hart taking a second and two third placings. Three Titles In A Row For Kidd

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough rider Jamie Kidd completed a hat-trick of road race titles at the national club road cycling championships near Nelson yesterday.

Kidd claimed victory in the AWD category – the third year in a row he has taken gold in the road race, following victory in Wanganui last year and Karaka in 2007.

Former Marlborough rider Brent Harris claimed the masters 50-54 years title riding for Canterbury club Pegasus. He headed home the final sprint to win the 80km event in two hours nine minutes 56 seconds.

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough member Sonia Ginders narrowly missed a medal in the under-15 girls’ competition, finishing fifth in the sprint finish.

Callum Saunders was ninth in the under-15 boys while Will Hart finished in the main bunch.

Road racing continues today and concludes tomorrow.

Taylor Rides To NZ Title At National Club Champs

Conway Taylor added another New Zealand title to the Cuddon Cycling Marlborough list, winning masters one men’s honours at the national club road cycling championships near Nelson yesterday.

In a Marlborough one-two finish, Taylor headed home fellow Cuddon club member Chris Heywood by 36 seconds. He clocked 35 minutes 35 seconds on the undulating, 25-kilometre Upper Moutere course.

Heywood took silver by a second from Pegasus Cycling Club member Nigel Pink.

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough picked up a second title when Rhonda Murphy was unchallenged in taking masters one women’s honours.

Ray Dunstan placed second in a fast masters three mens race, clocking 34.06, while Callum Saunders was fourth in the under-15 boys. Marlborough’s Bronwen Frazer successfully defended her national title in the senior women’s time trial. Now riding for the Nelson Star and Garter Wheelers club, Frazer clocked 36.12, five seconds clear of Gabrielle Vermunt of Southland, defending the title she won in Wanganui last year as a member of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough.

Former Marlborough rider Robin Reid saw the host club complete a senior title double when he took out the 40km senior men’s time trial in 52.45min. In a closely fought ride, Reid finished eight seconds clear of Hamilton City’s Justin Kerr, with double Olympian Chris Nicholson (Star and Garter) third. Reid recorded the day’s third fastest time overall, trailing under-23 riders Sam Horgan and Alex McGregor.

Horgan upset his more senior rivals to score the day’s fastest time and take under-23 honours with an impressive 51.49min.

The club nationals continue with road races today.

Consistent Craig Takes Curtis Piper Memorial 4 Stage

The final day of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s winter road cycling season created some surprises as riders competed in the final two stages of the Curtis Piper Memorial two stage event.
Stage three of the open grade event started with a 4km time trial along Conders Bend Road and Bedford Road, Renwick. Unfortunately the wet weather and a spill of diesel on a corner saw 5 riders fall, including the leader on time Jono Lee. Chris Heywood won the stage in 5m 20s with Paul Johnson (crashed) and David Craig equal on 5m 42s. This gave Craig a 12s lead over Lee and 29s over Andrew Morgan going into the final stage. Bryan Streeter took the handicap from Morgan and Denis Church. The final stage was a 44km massed start event from the Waihopai Valley turnoff on State Highway 63 to Wairau Valley township and return. The event was ridden in a quick time of 66m 23s despite the heavy rain at times. With most of the field still intact Marty Bruce won the final sprint from Ethan Roach and Heywood. The handicap again went to Streeter from Stephen Rooney and Church.
The overall result saw Craig take the Curtis Piper Memorial Cup by 29s over Morgan with Todd Neal third at 2m 32s. the overall handicap went to Streeter (20pt) from Morgan (16pt) and Church (14pt).
The junior under 17 grade also started with the 4km time trial. Ethan Roach (5m 30s) set the fastest time over Will Hart (6m 16s) and Quin Karwowski (6m 28s). The handicap went to Daniel Cresswell from Karwowski and Hart. The final stage was a 20km massed start on the open course. Hart won the stage by sprinting in Karwowski and Nathan McIntyre. The handicap was again won by Cresswell from Karwowski and Hart.
The overall result saw Hart take the honours by 55s to Karwowski and Cresswell at 1m 59s in third place.

Lee Leads Curtis Piper Memorial

Junior under 19 rider Jono Lee was in good form to lead Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Curtis Piper Memorial 4 stage event after the first two stages at Renwick last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade first stage was a tough 5km hill time trial into the Delta Road off State Highway 63. Lee clocked 9m 23s to head off Conway Taylor (9m 30s), Josh Scott (9m 34s), Ray Dunstan (9m 53s), and Jamie Kidd (9m 55s). The sealed handicap was close with Bryan Streeter (2m) 9m 00s taking the win from Andrew Morgan (1m 30s) and Lee (20s) 9m 03s and Denis Church (4m) 9m 05s.
The second stage was a 63km massed start/sealed handicap event from the Grove Mill Winery to the Waihopai Dam and return. Riders struggled into a strong headwind on the outward journey with the field staying virtually intact. With the pace on around the turn four riders were dropped off leaving 12 in the main bunch. Dunstan produced a strong burst to hold off David Craig and Andrew Morgan by a bike length on the line. The sealed handicap went to Craig (3m) from co-markers Morgan and Todd Neal.
The overall lead after two stages sees Lee with a 7 second lead over Taylor with Dunstan at 23 seconds in third place. Morgan leads the handicap with 10 points from Streeter (8), Curch and Craig (6) and Lee (5).
The junior under 17 grade rode a 3.4km time trial for the first stage with Ethan Roachan easy winner recording 6m 45s. The minor placings went to Will Hart (7m 26s) and Nick Blakiston (7m 55s). The handicap section was won by Quin Karwowski by 13s to Blakiston and another 1 second to Hart. Stage two was a 27km massed start with Karwowski taking the sprint home from Blakiston and Daniel Cresswell. The sealed handicap went to Karwowski again Cresswell and Blakiston.
The overall lead sees Hart with a 26 second lead over Blakiston with Karwowski in third at 42 seconds.
The final two stages will be on Saturday from Forrest Estate.

Heywood Excels In The Awatere Again

Chris Heywood headed off a strong field to take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Montana-Medway two stage event last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade event started with a 40km handicap stage from Montana Wines, over the Weld and Dashwood Pass, and then up the Awatere Valley Road to finish on the Medway hill. Over the hills most groups remained intact with the back markers closing in on the rest of the riders around Blairich. The steep Blairich hill climb, 8km from the finish, saw 7 break riders (off 4min) hit the front. Approximately 1 minute back the 7 scratch riders split on the climb with Tony Catterick, Jamie Hawke and Heywood in pursuit. The final climb to the finish at Medway saw Antony Clark (off 4m) take a good victory over co-markers Jamie Kidd and Dave Craig with the rest of the group a few seconds back. The scratch riders were only 33 seconds back with Heywood rolling over Hawke on the line for fastest time with Catterick a few seconds back.
Stage two was a massed start event back to Montana. The field started to split up as they came onto State Highway One at Dashwood with 9 riders going clear. More pressure on the Weld Pass saw the front group reduced to 6 riders. The sprint to the line at Montana saw Conway Taylor take the stage from Heywood, Ray Dunstan, Clark, Catterick and Hawke. The sealed handicap went to Clark (3m) by just 2 seconds to Alan Milne (6m) and another 7 seconds to Martin Fletcher (6m).
The overall result was a good win to Heywood by 10 seconds to Catterick and another 3 seconds to Hawke in third place. The overall result on handicap went to Clark after his excellent ride in the final stage to stay with the front group. Craig was 45 seconds back in second place with kevin Bishell another 9 seconds back in third place.
Meanwhile, Paul Johnson took out the Masters 2 title over 25km, in 35m 55s, at the Canterbury open time trial championships in Christchurch last Saturday morning.
