Cuddon Cycling Marlborough will hold their final event of winter from Fairhall tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade and junior under 17 grade will combine in a 43km handicap event covering two laps of the Benmoven, Ridge Resort, Godfreys Road course. The consistent Gerard van Antwerpen will be favoured for time honours with his main competition likely to come from Jeremy McKenzie, Josh Scott, Andrew Jamieson, Ray Dunstan, Tony Catterick and Brody Catterick.
All riders are to assemble at Fairhall hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Meanwhile, junior riders Leatham Landon-Lane, Callum Saunders, Nick Blakiston and Quinn Karwowski will compete in the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland starting today and finishing on Sunday. On Monday, Saunders will take part in a training camp as part of the National junior under 19 track squad at the ILT Velodrome. The boys will the go on to compete at the ILT Track Cycling Festival from Wednesday to Friday.

Friday, October 7th, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade riders will compete for the Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy from Okaramio tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 50km handicap event covers a rolling course out to Havelock, and then over the Mahakipawa hill to almost Linkwater and return. The past winners have usually come from strong rides over the Mahakipawa climbs and then holding off the fast finishing back markers over the final 15km from Havelock to Okaramio. Normal scratch markers Gerard van Antwerpen and Andrew Jamieson will be joined by Lee Griggs, Paul Newman, Brent Ackroyd, Antony Clark and David Craig on the scratch mark in their pursuit for fastest time honours.
The majority of the local junior cyclists are travelling North this weekend to compete in the National Schools Cycling Championships in Levin, Palmerston North and Fielding. The riders Leatham Landon-Lane, Peter Crampton, Callum Saunders, Quinn Karwowski and Nick Blakiston will compete in the Sir Bernard Fergusson team time trials on Saturday. On Sunday Saunders will take part in the Tour of Manawatu whilst the other riders compete in road events, and Monday all will ride in points races on the Manfield raceway.
Local riders are to assemble at the Okaramio Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Close Competition for Club Champs
Friday, September 23rd, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will face a tough challenge when they compete in the Club Championships on the hilly Seaview course at Seddon tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 40km massed start event covers 2 laps of the course with 6 championship titles at stake. The Mills Cup for fastest time will be fought out amongst the usual scratch markers Tony Catterick, Brodie Catterick, Gerard van Antwerpen, Josh Scott, Jeremy McKenzie, Ray Dunstan and Andrew Jamieson. The championship titles will see alot of tactics in play from the frontrunners. The battle for the Masters 45-54yr title will be a hot contest between Tony Catterick, Dunstan and van Antwerpen whilst the Masters 35-44yr title will see McKenzie and Jamieson in the running. Brodie Catterick and Scott will be favourites for the Junior under 19 men and Senior men titles respectively.. Outside of the top group the favourites for the Masters 55+ and Womens titles will be Brent Harris and Rhonda Murphy. The Gleeson Challenge Cup will go to the winner of the sealed handicap section.
The junior under 17 grade riders will compete over 1 lap of the course with two championship titles at stake. Callum Saunders looking for his third consecutive win and Quinn Karwowski will be favourites for the junior under 17 mens title with the junior women’s title likely to go to Georgia Catterick. Fastest time will take the Jowers Cup whilst the Drake Challenge Cup goes to the sealed handicap winner.
All riders are to assemble at the Starborough Tavern for registration between 1pm and 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start.
New Course For Henderson TT
Friday, September 16th, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will compete in the Henderson Bros. Cups and Dooley Cup time trial events from Renwick tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade Henderson Bros. Cups event is usually ridden on a 51.5km undulating course from Renwick to Havelock and return, but due to a concern for safety, the event will be trialled on a course up the Northbank Road and return. Interest will be focussed on the clash between the top three riders Ray Dunstan, Josh Scott and Jeremy McKenzie. Six weeks ago Dunstan rode to victory in the 40km Vincent Cup event on the Waihopai course, by 27 seconds over Scott. McKenzie’s strong performances of late could also put him in the picture for a strong challenge. The sealed handicap cup will also be closely contested with each rider trying to better their expected times.
The junior under 17 grade riders will compete in the Dooley Cup 16km time trial also over a new course on the Northbank Road. A good battle for the cup between is expected between Quinn Karwowski, who won the last time trial, and Callum Saunders .
All riders are to assemble at Forrest Estate Winery, State Highway 1, Renwick at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Competition Strong For David Duff Memorial Medals
Friday, September 2nd, 2011A large field is expected when Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders compete for the David Duff Memorial Trophy at Fairhall tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 56km massed start/sealed handicap event will cover a course from Fairhall hall and around the large Hawkesbury circuit 4 times and return.The testing course usually sees the field split up in the first 10km with the stronger riders vying for the trophy and the fastest time medals. Favourites on current form would have to be Gerard van Antwerpen, Tony Catterick and Brodie Catterick, with Josh Scott, Ray Dunstan, Conway Taylor, Andrew Jamieson and Brent Harris not out of contention. With medals also at stake in the handicap section, other riders in the field will be trying to group to save valuable time on the fastest riders.
The junior under 17 grade will race in a 26km massed start/sealed handicap event around the small Hawkesbury circuit twice and return. Good rivalry will be expected again between Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski for the fastest time honours. Competition will be intense for the prize vouchers at stake for the time and sealed handicap placings.
All riders are to assemble at Fairhall Hall at 1pm for registration by 1.15pm and a 1.30pm start.
Three Consecutive Wins For Van Antwerpen?
Friday, August 26th, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will compete in the annual Blenheim to Picton and return event for the Osgood Cups tomorrow afternoon.
The prestigious 54km open grade handicap event was first raced for in 1939 and carries a great array of past winners over the cup’s history. Riders competing tomorrow to try and repeat previous efforts are Gill Painter (1964, 1969, 1993), Graham Henderson (1971, 1993) and Craig Murphy (2010). The handicap honours are wide open with the winner likely to come from a group which remains intact throughout the journey.
The fastest time trophy is also well sought after with scratch rider Gerard van Antwerpen trying for his third consecutive win. Van Antwerpen holds the current record of 1hr 14m 30s, set in 2009, after holding the previous record of 1hr 15m 02s since 1999. His main rivals in a sprint finish will be co-markers Brodie Catterick, Tony Catterick, Jeremy McKenzie, Ray Dunstan and Josh Scott.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a 21km handicap event over 3 laps of the lower Wairau circuit.
All riders are to assemble at the Blenheim Research Centre at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Good Field Expected For Two-Up TT
Friday, August 19th, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will compete in the popular two-up time trial event for the Geddes Memorial Cups on the Wairau Valley Road course tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 40km event starts at the Waihopai Valley turnoff on State Highway 63 and covers a course to just before the Wairau Valley township and return. The favourite pairing for fastest time will be Gerard van Antwerpen and Jeremy McKenzie, whilst the combinations of Brent Ackroyd/Mike Murphy and Lee Griggs/Todd Neal could be a good chance for a minor placing. All pairings will also be in contention for the sealed handicap cup.
The junior under 17 grade and any riders wishing to compete in a shorter event will ride over 20km on the same course.
All riders are to assemble opposite the Grove Mill Winery in Waihopai Valley Road at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Palatchie Cup Will Test Riders
Friday, August 12th, 2011Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders head into the hills when they compete in the James Palatchie Memorial Cup event tomorrow afternoon from Riverlands.
The open grade 45km handicap event from Blenheim into the Awatere Valley and return has always been a true test for the riders, since its inception in 1947, with the climbs over the Weld and Dashwood Pass. The event starts on SH1 in Riverlands and follows a course into the Awatere Valley Road before turning home to finish in Alabama Rd opposite Riverlands hall. Past winners of the prestigious event lining up tomorrow are Antony Clark (2004), Mary Lister (2006) and Gill Painter (2008) and Lee Griggs (2010). Time honours will be interesting with the majority of the scratch group away riding the first of the Benchmark series in Nelson. Remaining scratchmarkers Gerard van Antwerpen, Conway Taylor, and Andrew Jamieson will have to keep intact to keep time on the other strong back groups.
All riders are to assemble for the open race at Riverlands Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a handicap event over 24km on the Taylor Pass Road for the Palatchie Cup. On recent form Callum Saunders will be favoured for time honours on the rolling course. Riders are to assemble just beyond the new roundabout on Taylor Pass Road at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

The open grade 40km event follows a rolling course from Grove Mill Winery to just beyond Craiglochart and return. Ray Dunstan will be favorite to win the Vincent Cup with his consistent form in the Cycle World summer series. His main competition will come from other time trial rivals Conway Taylor and Josh Scott. The top three should record a times of around 56-58 minutes. Interest will also be
focussed on the performances of Tony Catterick and Brodie Catterick if they makean appearance, especiallyafter their strong showing in last weeks Funnell Trophy road race. Other solid performances around the hour mark are likely to come from Gerard van Antwerpen, Jeremy McKenzie and Andrew Jamieson. The Verhey Cup will go to the best performance on handicap.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a 20km time trial to just past the Spy Base and return. Callum Saunders will be favoured for time over Will Hart, Nick Blakiston and Quinn Karwowski..
