McKenzie, Harper & Westend Take TT Cups

Jeremy McKenzie held on to take out the Henderson Bros. Cup for fastest time at Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Fairweathers Winter Series time trial event last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 51km event covered an out and return course on the Northbank Road. Riders encountered swirling winds on the course with Ray Dunstan impressing on the outward journey with a turn time of 34m 30s. Other top contenders were McKenzie (36m 38s), Sean O’Neill (37m 55s) and Gerard van Antwerpen (37m 58s). Dunstan heading for a record breaking ride was unfortunate to puncture early into the return journey. McKenzies hard effort faltered in the latter stages which saw his 1m 20s advantage over O’Neill and van Antwerpen start to whittle down. Determination saw him take victory (1hr 16m 15s) by 39s over van Antwerpen with just a further 5 seconds back to O’Neill. There was close competition for the handicap cup with Craig Harper, who recorded 5th fastest time, taking the win by 1m 10s to O’Neill with Ben Verhoef another 30s back in third place.
The junior under 17 grade rode in a 16km time trial event for the Dooley Cup also on the Northbank Road. Thomas Westend carried on his recent good form with a strong ride, recording 25m 58s for the win. The minor placings saw good rides to Jack Ritchie (28m 16s) and Ezra Wells (28m 59s). The sealed handicap went to Fergus Greer by 45s to Niels van Antwerpen with another 9 seconds to Hannah Morgan in third place.
Meanwhile, tomorrow afternoon Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will carry on the Fairweathers Winter series with team time trial events on the Wairau Valley Road. The open grade event over 40km will see former Marlborough rider and Olympian, Robin Reid of Nelson team up with Dunstan, McKenzie and Tony Catterick. The junior event will be over 20km. All riders are to assemble opposite the Grove Mill Winery on the Waihopai Road at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
