Hawkins Takes Hotel Challenge

Saturday, September 25th, 2010
Strong riding on the hills saw Mark Hawkins take a clear victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 50km handicap event covered a course from Okaramio Tavern to Havelock and over the Mahakipawa hill to almost Linkwater and return. All handicap groups stayed intact untill the Mahakipawa hill. At the turn for home front marker Denis Church (off 26m) still had a 12 minute lead over the scratch riders, but several other riders were rapidly closing the gap. At Rocky Creek, co-markers Martin Fletcher and Hawkins (off 9m) hit the front, and then Hawkins pulled away on the Rocky Creek hill. Over the last 6kms Hawkins held a good pace to take line honours by 18 seconds to Fletcher. Scratch markers Conway Taylor and Gerard van Antwerpen came in 1m 15s later with Taylor taking third place and fastest time honours.

Mahakipawa Hill Challenge

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010
Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade riders will compete for the Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy from Okaramio tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 50km handicap event covers a rolling course out to Havelock, and then over the Mahakipawa hill to almost Linkwater and return. The past winners have usually come from strong rides over the Mahakipawa climbs and then holding off the fast finishing back markers over the final 15km from Havelock to Okaramio. Fastest time honours will see the consistent Gerard van Antwerpen in competition with scratch co-markers Conway Taylor, Ray Dunstan and Josh Scott.
The majority of the local junior cyclists are travelling North this weekend to compete in the National Schools Cycling Championships in Levin, Palmerston North and Fielding. The riders will compete in various age groups in team time trials on Saturday, road races and the Manawatu Tour on Sunday, and points races on the Manfield raceway on Monday.
Local riders are to assemble at the Okaramio Tavern at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Top Time Trial Riders Clash

Thursday, September 16th, 2010
Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will compete in the Henderson Bros. Cups and Dooley cup time trial events from Renwick tomorrow afternoon.

The open grade Henderson Bros. Cups event is ridden on a 51.5km undulating course from Renwick to Havelock and return. Interest will be focussed on the clash between the top three riders Ray Dunstan, Conway Taylor and Jono Lee. Dunstan will be in good form after just returning from the World Masters Championships in Austria where he was placed 14th in the time trial in the 50-54yrs age group. The up and coming youngster Lee will be pushing for his second time trial win this season after defeating Taylor 6 weeks ago in the 40km Vincent Cup event on the Waihopai course. The longer course will probably favour the two older riders, Dunstan and Taylor. The sealed handicap cup will also be closely contested with each rider trying to better their expected times.
The junior under 17 grade riders will compete in the Dooley Cup 16km time trial over 2 laps of the Renwick/Vintage Lane block. A good battle for the cup between Brody Catterick and Callum Saunders is expected.
All riders are to assemble at Forrest Estate Winery, State Highway 1, Renwick at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Controversial Finish In David Duff Memorial Leads To Disqualifications

Saturday, September 11th, 2010
Brent Harris took victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s David Duff Memorial Trophy event, last Saturday afternoon, after a rather controversial finish.
The open grade 56km massed start event started and finished at Fairhall hall, taking in 4 laps of the large Hawkesbury circuit. The large field got away to a fast start with the riders breaking up into 3 main groups within the first 10kms. Each group remained reasonably intact throughout the event with 9 riders in the front group lining up to take the fastest time trophy and medals. The finishing sprint came into some dispute when several riders committed a traffic infringement. The result of the dispute committee was clear with the first five placed riders disqualified. Harris took the Trophy and gold medal, with Tony Catterick and Mike Murphy taking the minor placings.
The sealed handicap gold medal easily went to Denis Church (27m) who had a great ride to stay with the third bunch until the last few kilometres. Mike Murphy (3m) was second with Lisa McManaway (18m) in third place.
The junior under 17 grade rode over 26km for the Newport Trophy, covering two laps of the small Hawkesbury circuit. Five riders formed in the front group with Callum Saunders retaining the trophy. Nick Blakiston was rewarded with a good second placing after he almost snatched the win but was taken at the post. Quinn Karwowski took third place. The sealed handicap went to Blakiston (2m) from Karwowski (1m 30s) and Leatham Landon-Lane (1m 30s) respectively.

Competition Hot For David Duff Memorial

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Large fields are expected at Fairhall tomorrow afternoon when Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders compete for the David Duff Memorial Trophy and the Newport Trophy.
The open grade 56km massed start/sealed handicap event will cover a course from Fairhall hall and around the large Hawkesbury circuit 4 times and return. The testing course usually sees the field split up in the first 10km with the stronger riders vying for the trophy and the fastest time medals. Favourites would have to be Gerard van Antwerpen, Conway Taylor, Tony Catterick, Jono Lee, Ray Dunstan and Chris Heywood. Also four times winner Kevin Bishell (1989, 2001, 2004, 2007) cannot be discounted. With medals also at stake in the handicap section, other riders in the field will be trying to group to save valuable time.
The junior under 17 grade will race in a 26km massed start/sealed handicap event around the small Hawkesbury circuit twice and return. Good rivalry will be expected again between Brody Catterick and Callum Saunders for the fastest time honours. Competition will be intense for the prize vouchers at stake for the time and sealed handicap placings.
All riders will assemble at Fairhall Hall for both events tomorrow. The junior under 17 grade will assemble at a new time of 11.30am for a 12 noon start, whilst the open grade will assemble at the normal time of 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Osgood Cup Victory To Craig Murphy

Saturday, September 4th, 2010
A strong effort from Craig Murphy gave him a good victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Osgood Cups event last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 54km handicap event to Picton and return saw riders encounter headwinds on the outward journey. Great teamwork by the 6 minute break trio of Murphy, Lee Griggs and Mike Murphy saw them haul in the 12 minute markers on the Elevation climb back out of Picton. It was at this stage that Griggs went clear but was caught again by his co-markers and Rhonda Murphy (off 12m) at Koromiko. The quartet hit the front before Tuamarina and were never headed. The sprint for line honours saw Craig Murphy head off Mike Murphy, Griggs and Rhonda Murphy respectively. The fastest time trophy went to scratchmarker Gerard van Antwerpen from co-marker Brent Harris after a good solid partnership.

Osgood Cups At Stake

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will compete in the annual Blenheim to Picton and return event for the Osgood Cups tomorrow afternoon.
The prestigious 54km open grade handicap event was first raced for in 1939 and carries a great array of past winners over the cup’s history. The fastest time trophy is always well sought after with  scratch rider Gerard van Antwerpen having a great record. Van Antwerpen holds the current record of 1hr 14m 30s, set last year, after holding the previous record of 1hr 15m 02s since 1999. His main rivals in a sprint finish will be co-markers Conway Taylor, Tony Catterick, Chris Heywood and Jono Lee. The handicap honours are wide open with the winner likely to come from a group which remains intact throughout the journey.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a 21km handicap event over 3 laps of the lower Wairau circuit. Callum Saunders and Brodie Catterick will carry on their rivalry for time honours from the scratch mark.
All riders are to assemble at the Blenheim Research Centre at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
