Taylor/Scott Take Geddes Two-Up

Conway Taylor and Josh Scott teamed well to beat their closest rivals by over two minutes in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Geddes
Memorial Cups two-up time trial event from Renwick last Saturday afternoon. 
The open grade 40km two-up time trial event was ridden in very favourable conditions on an out and return course on State Highway 63. At the turn the Taylor and Scott combination (26m 44s) were 1m 42s up on the Gerard van Antwerpen/Ryan Lock pairing with another 1m 06s to Martin Fletcher and Brent Ackroyd. At this stage only 2 minutes separated the next 7 teams in the 13 team field. With a slight head wind on the return journey Taylor and Scott cruised home in a good time of 56m 07s ahead of Van Antwerpen/Ryan (58m 07s) and Fletcher/Ackroyd (60m 04s). The race for the handicap trophy saw the usual middle to front markers excel in the good light conditions. It was the husband and wife combination of Mike and Lisa McManaway that turned in a very good actual time of 66m 43s (8th) to take the win on sealed handicap with 51m 43s. Other good rides came from Mary Lister an Hannah Maher (52m 42s) in second place and Mike Murphy and Glen Bateman (55m 35s) in third place.
The junior under 17 pairing of Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski rode a 20km trial on the open course with an impressive time of 31m 15s.

Riders In Two-Up Mode

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will compete in two-up time trial events  on the Wairau Valley Road course tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 40km event for the Geddes Memorial Cups starts at the Waihopai Valley turnoff on State Highway 63 and covers a course to just before the Wairau valley township and return. Top contender for fastest time will be the pairing of last years winner Conway Taylor and up and coming youngster Jono Lee who won the Vincent Cup individual time trial 3 weeks back. Their closest rivals could be a pairing of scratch riders Gerard van Antwerpen and Chris Heywood, whilst Brent Ackroyd and Martin Fletcher could be a good combination for a minor placing. All pairings will also be in contention for the sealed handicap cup.
The junior under 17 grade will compete over 20km on the same course. With alot of competition in the back marks this season times will be close amongst the top pairings.
All riders are to assemble opposite the Grove mill winery in waihopai Road at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Griggs & Catterick Impress Over Hills

Lee Griggs continued his recent good form with a well deserved victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s James Palatchie Memorial Cup event last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 45km handicap event from Riverlands to the Awatere Valley and return is always a test of hill climbing ability with the climbs over the Weld and Dashwood Pass. With a slight head wind on the outward journey Denis Church (off 26m) was first to the turn for home on the Awatere Valley Road. Griggs (off 10m) and Michelle Catterick (off 10m) had left their co-markers behind and were only 2m 21s back after an impressive ride over the hills. On the return journey the pair soon hit the front to be never headed. Griggs took the trophy in the sprint to the line with Catterick an equally deserved fine ride in second place. Martin Fletcher (off 10m) battled on alone to take a good third place to finish 48 seconds clear of break riders Brent Ackroyd (off 3m 30s) and Brent Harris. Fastest time honours went to Gerard van Antwerpen (scratch) from co-marker Tony Catterick.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 24km handicap event on an out and return course on the Taylor Pass Road for the Palatchie Cup. Sonia Ginders (off 7m) rode away from co-marker taylor Burn in the latter stages for a good win by 50 seconds. Burn held on to second place by just 17 seconds from the fast finishing scratch rider Brodie Catterick who took third place after riding away from his co-markers.

Hills A Test For Riders

Hill climbing will certainly play a major part in the results of the riders in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s James Palatchie Memorial Cup event  tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 45km handicap event from Blenheim into the Awatere Valley and return has always been a true test for the riders, since its inception in 1947, with the climbs over the Weld and Dashwood Pass. The event starts on SH1 in Riverlands and follows a course into the Awatere Valley Road before turning home to finish in Alabama Rd opposite Riverlands hall. Past winners of the prestigious event lining up tomorrow are Antony Clark (2004), Mary Lister (2006) and Gill Painter (2008).  Amongst the favourites for time honours are Tony Catterick, Gerard van Antwerpen, Conway Taylor, Chris Heywood, and Jono Lee.
All riders are to assemble for the open race at Riverlands Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a handicap event over 24km on the Taylor Pass Road for the Palatchie Cup. On recent form Callum Saunders will be favoured for time honours on the rolling course. Riders are to assemble just beyond the new roundabout on Taylor Pass Road at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Murphy Takes Funnell Trophy In Strong Finish

A strong finishing sprint gave Mike Murphy victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Funnell Trophy event at Fairhall last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 41km handicap event started and finished at Fairhall hall, covering two laps of the large Hawkesbury circuit and one lap of the small Hawkesbury circuit. The cool and wet conditions saw bunches working steady with all the action happening in the last 10km. After losing two riders with punctures the remaining trio of the 6m 30s group, Martyn Bruce, Craig Murphy and Mike Murphy gathered in the 8 strong 9m 30s group and were in hot pursuit of the leaders. The scratch markers had also caught the 4m break bunch and were closing in fast. With 2kms to go Lisa McManaway (off 18m) and co-marker Julie Fry were unlucky to be caught. The large sprint home saw a big lead out from Bruce with Murphy taking the honours over Lee Griggs (9m 30s), Bruce, and Mike McManaway (9m 30s). Scratch finished just 30 seconds back with Chris Heywood taking a close one for time honours over Tony Catterick, and Antony Clark (4m).
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 22km massed start event for the James Bros. Trophy, once around the large Hawkesbury circuit and back to Fairhall. Normal scratch rider Callum Saunderswent clear with Nick Blakiston, Quinn Karwowski and Leatham Landon-Lane. These four stayed intact to the end with Saunders dominant for line honours over Karwowski, Blakiston and Landon-Lane. The sealed handicap went to Sam Thomas (7m)by 1 minute to Karwowski (1m 30s) and Blakiston (1m 30s).

Jamie Kidd Fundraiser This Saturday Night

There is a fundraiser for Jamie at 7.30pm this Saturday night (7th Aug) at the Royal Hotel (back room behind main bar). Entry is $15 which includes entertainment and supper. There will also be some club presentations during the night plus an Auction with plenty of goodies to bid on. Please support Jamie by your attendance to help him with his expenses for the 2010 UCI Para Cycling Road World Championship in Baie-Comeau, Canada. Jamie leaves next week. See you there!!!
