Tyney Leads Locals

Visiting rider Adam Tyney holds a small advantage over the local field after the first two stages of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Curtis Piper Memorial 4 stage event at Renwick last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade event commenced with a 4km prologue time trial along Conders bend Road and Bedford Road. Craig Murphy and Tyney both recorded 5m 18s to lead with Max Pendleton (5m 23s), Antony Clark (5m 31s and Grant Ludemann (5m 31s) in the minor placings. Murphy headed the handicap section from Mike Murphy and Mike McManaway.
Stage two covered a 63km massed start event from Grove Mill Winery up the Waihopai Valley to just beyond the Waihopai Dam and return. Seven riders remained in the front group for the sprint home with Pendleton heading Clark and Mike Murphy at the line. The handicap section saw McManaway take the points from Mary Lister and Mike Murphy.
The final two stages next Saturday has Tyney with a 5 second advantage over Pendleton with Clark and Ludemann another 8 seconds back at third equal.
The junior under 17 grade sees Will Hart leading by 17 seconds over Nick Blakiston with reverse placings in the handicap section.

First 2 Stages OF Curtis Piper Memorial

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders will compete in the first two stages of the Curtis Piper Memorial four stage event from Forrest Estate Winery tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade event will start with a 4km prologue time trial from Condors Bend Road to Bedford Road. This will be immediately followed by a 63km massed start stage from the Grove Mill Winery up the Waihopai Valley Road to just beyond the Waihopai Dam and return. The final two stages will be ridden next Saturday.
The junior under 17 grade will cover stage one of the open event and the ride a 28km massed start event on the same course. Both grades will also have a sealed handicap component incorporated.
All riders are to assemble at Forrest Estate Winery at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Van Antwerpen Third Consecutive Squire Cup Win

Gerard van Antwerpen took his third consecutive fastest time and the Ray Squire Memorial Cup in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Troubador Trophy event at Rapaura last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 70km massed start event six times around the lower Rapaura circuit drew a small field in the hot conditions. After pressure by Van Antwerpen in lap three the front group whittled down to five riders. Van Antwerpen made his final break in the final lap for a comfortable win by 16 seconds. The sprint for the minor placings went to Antony Clark from Stephen Rooney, Grant Ludemann and visiting rider Adam Tyney. The sealed handicap Trobador Trophy went to Warren Hall (off 15m) from Craig Murphy (10m) and Clark (1m 30s) in third place. Hall had last won this Trophy in 1983 and 1984.
The junior under 17 grade saw Will Hart make the decisive break on lap two of their 3 lap event. Hart went away for fastest time honours by 1m 02s at the finish. The minor placings were taken by Nick Blakiston, Nathan McIntyre and Daniel Cresswell. McIntyre took the sealed handicap for the Troubador Trophy from Cresswell and Hart.

Three In A Row For Van Antwerpen?

With the return to Saturday racing a good field is expected for Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Troubador Trophy and Ray Squire Memorial Cup event at Rapaura tomorrow afternoon.

The open grade 70km massed start/sealed handicap event covers 6 laps of the Rapaura circuit taking in Hammerichs Road, Old Renwick Rd, O’Dwyers Rd and Rapaura Road. The Squire Cup for fastest time will see past winners Kevin Bishell (1988, 2002 and 2003) and Gerard van Antwerpen (2008, 2009) trying to repeat their efforts. Several riders could remain in the front group for time honours with current unknown form showing out. The Troubador Trophy for handicap will see past winners Graham Henderson (1979), Denis Church (1993, 2009), Van Antwerpen (1997), Gill Painter (1999, 2008), and Glen Herkt (2004, 2005) all in contention.

The junior under 17 grade 35km massed start/sealed handicap  will run over 3 laps of the open course with the Troubador Trophy going to the handicap winner. Callum Saunders is expected to be dominant in the time stakes,with his main competition coming from Will Hart, Nick Blakiston and Quinn Karwowski.
All riders are to assemble at the Rapaura Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Two-Up Time Trial

Riders are reminded that Wednesday evening (17th February) is the Two-Up time trial event from Wither Hills Winery 6.30pm start 6pm assemble. Followed by Cycle World time trial presentations if weather is suited.

Saturday Road Racing Underway Again

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders return to Saturday road events tomorrow afternoon with the Whatamango 3 stage tour.
The open grade 64km event starts with a 27km massed start stage from Blenheim to Picton with the top riders trying to get some time advantage over the Elevation climb into Picton. Stage two is a 10km individual time trial from Waikawa to the top of the gruelling climb up the Whatamango Hill which overlooks Port Underwood. The final stage returns from Picton to Blenheim with 3 chances of bonus sprint seconds which definately come into play if there is a close classification after stage two. Each stage also carries sealed handicap points towards the handicap trophy.
The Junior under 17 grade will compete in a two stage event for the Redwood Fisheries Cup over stage one and three courses of the open event.
All riders are to assemble at the Research Centre at 12.30pm sharp for a 1pm start.

Good Times On Final TT Evening

Cool and damp conditions didn’t deter the enthusiasm of riders on the final evening of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Cycle World time trial series, when excellent times were recorded.
The course from Wither Hills Winery on New Renwick Road to Fromm Winery on Godfreys Road and return saw several personal best times and a new Masters 55-59 years record to Ryan Lock (22m 23s) lowering the old mark held by Martin Fletcher by 9 seconds. Fastest rider was Ray Dunstan (20m 26s) who was just 2 seconds outside his own Masters 50-54 years record. The minor placings went to Conway Taylor (20m 54s) and Jimmy Shapcott (21m 10s). Other notable personal best times on the night were Brent Ackroyd and junior under 17 rider Callum Saunders who both recorded 23m 01s for 7th equal place.
The sealed handicap went to Will Hart by 14 seconds to Nick Blakiston with Lock another 10 seconds back in third place.
