Heywood Excels In The Awatere Again

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
Chris Heywood headed off a strong field to take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Montana-Medway two stage event last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade event started with a 40km handicap stage from Montana Wines, over the Weld and Dashwood Pass, and then up the Awatere Valley Road to finish on the Medway hill. Over the hills most groups remained intact with the back markers closing in on the rest of the riders around Blairich. The steep Blairich hill climb, 8km from the finish, saw 7 break riders (off 4min) hit the front. Approximately 1 minute back the 7 scratch riders split on the climb with Tony Catterick, Jamie Hawke and Heywood in pursuit. The final climb to the finish at Medway saw Antony Clark (off 4m) take a good victory over co-markers Jamie Kidd and Dave Craig with the rest of the group a few seconds back. The scratch riders were only 33 seconds back with Heywood rolling over Hawke on the line for fastest time with Catterick a few seconds back.
Stage two was a massed start event back to Montana. The field started to split up as they came onto State Highway One at Dashwood with 9 riders going clear. More pressure on the Weld Pass saw the front group reduced to 6 riders. The sprint to the line at Montana saw Conway Taylor take the stage from Heywood, Ray Dunstan, Clark, Catterick and Hawke. The sealed handicap went to Clark (3m) by just 2 seconds to Alan Milne (6m) and another 7 seconds to Martin Fletcher (6m).
The overall result was a good win to Heywood by 10 seconds to Catterick and another 3 seconds to Hawke in third place. The overall result on handicap went to Clark after his excellent ride in the final stage to stay with the front group. Craig was 45 seconds back in second place with kevin Bishell another 9 seconds back in third place.
Meanwhile, Paul Johnson took out the Masters 2 title over 25km, in 35m 55s, at the Canterbury open time trial championships in Christchurch last Saturday morning.

Medway Tough Challenge

Thursday, September 24th, 2009
Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade riders will compete in the tough Montana-Medway two stage event tomorrow afternoon.
The first 40km stage is a handicap event covering a course from Montana over the Weld and Dashwood Pass climbs, and then the uphill drag up the Awatere Valley Road to finish on the steep Medway hill. The return mass start/sealed handicap stage is usually ridden at high pace back down the valley and then the climb back over the hills to finish at Montana Wines. Much interest will be focussed on the back groups which contain many of the riders currently preparing for the National Club Championships in Nelson in October. The hard course and usual winds encountered will see a great battle for fastest time between scratch riders Jamie Hawke, Jono Lee, Brendan Neylon, Tony Catterick, Ray Dunstan, Kevin Bishell, Josh Scott, Chris Heywood, Paul Newman, Gerard van Antwerpen, Conway Taylor and Sean O’Neill.
All riders are to assemble opposite Montana Wines at 1pm for a 1.30pm start (normal front markers will start 10-15minutes earlier).

Hawke Cleans Up In Cuddon Championship

Saturday, September 5th, 2009
Junior under 19 rider Jamie Hawke outsprinted his rivals to take first place and fastest time honours in the Cuddon Marlborough 80km Open Championships at Fairhall on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 80km handicap event was run over a new course this year which tested the best of the competitors. Starting and finishing at Wither Hills Winery on New Renwick Road the event took in 6 laps of a circuit including the Benmorven block and the Ridge Resort climb. After three laps the front and middle markers were starting to tire and the stronger riders were starting to show out in the back groups. A timely break before the Ridge Hill climb saw scratch marker Brendan Neylon pressure his nine co-markers, with the youngsters Jono Lee and Hawke quickly joining him. The only other rider to successfully get across the gap was Conway Taylor. The four soon had the eight strong 6 minute break bunch in their sights and split them apart on the next climb. Jamie Kidd and David Craig joined them as the now front runners and as the pressure went on again it was Taylor and Craig who dropped away. These four just rode away to be 3 minutes 40 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals at the line. Hawke convincingly won the sprint to take the C Gibson Challenge Cup (first place), the Ray Gibson Challenge Cup (fastest time), the Savoy Trophy (first local rider) and the Junior under 19 mens title sash. Lee was a good second with another 8 seconds back to Neylon (Senior Mens title) and Kidd respectively. Craig held on to finish just ahead of scratch marker Chris Heywood (Masters title) and a large bunch which included Bronwen Fraser (Womens title).
The junior under 17 grade competed in the Cuddon Marlborough Open 30km event run over 2 laps of the circuit. It was 4 minute markers Daniel Ellison (Nelson) and Cameron Ford (Nelson) who made the early move to break away from their co-markers. The pair picked up 8 minute marker Sam Griffin (Nelson) and proceeded through the field. Ellison rode well for a thirteen second victory over Griffin with another 22 seconds back to Ford in third place. Local scratch marker Callum Saunders stuck to his task to ride in alone in fourth place and took out the Junior under 17 title by 1minute 20 seconds from Ellison.

Challenging New Course For 80

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009
The new circuit for the Cuddon Cycling Marlborough 80km Open Championship should be a good test for all riders at Fairhall tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 80km handicap event starts and finishes at the Wither Hills Winery and covers 6 laps of the Benmorven/Cemetery circuit taking in the Ridge Resort climb on each lap. Marlborough riders will be keen to see the C Gibson Challenge Cup (winner) and the Ray Gibson Challenge Cup (fastest time) return home this year after Nelson riders have dominated in the last two years. Also at stake are Championship sashes for the fastest rider in the various grades, Senior Men, Women, Masters and Junior Under 19 Men. Marlborough riders competing  who have taken time honours previously are Jamie Kidd (1995, 1996), Gerard van Antwerpen (1999), Paul Johnson (2003), and Tony Catterick (2004). Van Antwerpen and Catterick are again likely contenders this year along with Conway Taylor, Chris Heywood, Josh Scott, Paul Newman, Kevin Bishell and youngsters Jono Lee and Jamie Hawke who will all grace the scratch mark. A contingent from Nelson may also include former Marlborough rider Robin Reid who has never actually taken honours in this event mainly due to his riding commitments overseas. A string of riders have taken the handicap honours previously which include Graham Henderson (1995), Kidd (2000), Bishell (2002), Pete Halligan (2003), Catterick (2004), Martin Fletcher (2005), and Paul Johnson (2006). The Championship is also the first interclub round of the H G Hunter Memorial Shield.
The junior under 17 grade will compete over 2 laps of the circuit with Championship sashes up for the fastest Junior Woman and Junior Man. Favoured for the titles would be Elodie Jacoby and Sonia Ginders and Ethan Roach and Callum Saunders respectively.
All riders are to assemble at Wither Hills Winery at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
