Hard 2 Stage To Heywood

Saturday, August 29th, 2009
Strong riding in difficult conditions gave Chris Heywood victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s two stage event from Montana to Seaview and return last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 60km event started with a 40km handicap stage covering a course from Montana Wines on State Highway One, over the Weld and Dashwood Pass to Seddon, and then once over the testing Seaview course returning to finish in Seddon. It was 9 minute markers Bryan Streeter and Martin Fletcher who paired well together to hit the front on the climb out of Seddon. The pair stuck to their task with Streeter riding away in the last 5km to take the stage by 8 seconds to Fletcher with the chasing 4 minute break group only 3 seconds back. Jamie Kidd took third just ahead of Andrew Curnow and David Craig. Fastest time went to scratch marker Jamie Hawke who just held off co-marker Heywood on the line.
The final 20km stage was a time trial from Seddon back to Montana into a strong headwind. Heywood outclassed his rivals with a good time of 34m 58s to take the win by 34 seconds to Hawke and another 1m 06s to Craig. The sealed handicap went to Craig from Heywood and Streeter.
The overall result went to Heywood (1hr 36m 13s) from Hawke (1hr 36m 47s) with Craig (1hr 40m 18s) taking third place. Craig took the overall handicap by a clear margin of 1m 18s from Streeter with Stephen Rooney another 48 seconds back in third place.

The top team of Tony Catterick, Gerard van Antwerpen, Conway Taylor and Chris Heywood performed as expected in recording a good 54 minutes 12 seconds for the fastest time honours. The handicap section was won by Gill Painter, Cathy Hale, Denis Church and Jim Parker. Lee Perseveres For Pelorus Cup Win

Saturday, August 15th, 2009
Junior under 19 rider Jono Lee powered through the field to take first place and fastest time honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Pelorus Cup event from Canvastown last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 80km handicap event from Canvastown to the top of the Whangamoa and return was ridden in miserable wet conditions. The first climb over the Rai Saddle after 20km did damage to the field early on. Scratch marker Lee who lost his co-marker Chris Heywood (punctured) hauled in the 8 strong 1 minute break bunch on the climb and rode straight through them. First to turn for home was front marker Denis Church (off 31m) who was 3 minutes clear of his nearest rival mike McManaway ( off 21m). Lee was next, another 2 minutes back after riding through the remaining riders, and was in front on the Rai Saddle climb by 3 minutes. Regrouping on the final run home saw six riders in pursuit, however Lee held on for a well deserved victory by just over 2 minutes. McManaway pulled out a strong finishing sprint for second place from Sean O’Neill (off 1m) and Antony Clark (off 1m).
The junior under 17 grade covered a 35km course to Rai Valley and return with Leatham Landon-Lane (off 6m) taking the Pelorus Cup from scratch marker Will Hart.

Pelorus Challenge

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders are in for a challenge tomorrow when they compete for the Pelorus Cup on the Canvastown to the top of the Whangamoa and return course.
The open grade 80km handicap event will see some strong riding in the back marks as many riders prepare themselves for the N Z Club National Championships in Nelson in October. Most handicap groups usually try to stay intact over the Rai Saddle and Whangamoa climbs on the outward journey to keep the back markers at bay. The long drag through the Collins Valley and the Rai Saddle climb usually takes its toll on the riders as they start to tire. Then it’s another 20km rolling ride home to Canvastown. Favourites for fastest time amongst the scratch riders will be Tony Catterick, Jamie Hawke and Chris Heywood with Paul Newman and Kevin Bishell also being in the mix.
The junior under 17 grade will also compete for the Pelorus Cup in a 35km handicap event to Rai Valley and return. Ethan Roach and Callum Saunders will be powering it through the field from the scrach mark with Andrew Curnow’s record of 57m 33s (2005) looking to be under threat.
All riders are to assemble at the Canvastown School carpark at 1pm sharp with the front markers likely to start around 1.15pm.

Breakthrough gold medal for NZ cyclists at world championships

12 August  2009

Gold Medal winning team of Cameron Karwowski (Marlborough), Sam Webster (Auckland) and Ethan Mitchell (Auckland).

The New Zealand sprint team has won gold on the opening night of finals at the UCI Junior World Track Cycling championships in Moscow overnight.

The trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster (both Auckland) and Cameron Karwowski (Marlborough) took out the gold medal ride-off against Germany in 1min 00.236s after they topped the qualifiers earlier in the day.

It is the first time that any New Zealand cyclist has won a medal of any colour in the individual or team sprint at any world event including senior and junior world championships or Olympics.

“It is an outstanding performance,” said Mark Elliott, high performance director for BikeNZ. “Sam and Ethan have been developing well and produced some promising results at the junior worlds last year and again at the Youth Olympics in Sydney earlier this year.

“But their development along with Cameron Karwowski has been exceptional this year. The key has been the outstanding work from the BikeNZ sprint coach Justin Grace whose focus and attention to detail has really rubbed off on these guys.

“He has been New Zealand’s pre-eminent sprinter in recent years and now is doing a superb job as a coach.

“Sprinting has been the domain of the Europeans in the main over many years , so to go to the heart of European cycling in Russia and win a gold medal in the team sprint from New Zealand is a very significant result.”

It is only the fifth gold medal that New Zealand has won at the junior world track championships following Alan Miller in the kilo time trial at Wanganui in 1983, Sarah Ulmer in the individual pursuit and points race at Quito in 1994 and the team pursuit in 2005 in Austria.

Finals results, team sprint: New Zealand 1:00.236, 1; Germany 1:00.955, 2; Poland 1:00.868, 3.

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

A strong group of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders travelled to Nelson last Saturday to compete on the circuit that will be used for the NZ Club Nationals Championships in October.

Marlborough riders competed well with the most notable being junior under 19 rider Jamie Hawke who broke away with two other riders with 25km to go in the major 128km Grade 1 event. The trio managed to keep at bay the chasing bunch by just 30m with Ian Smallman (Christchurch) just heading off Hawke by half a bike length on the line. Van Antwerpen Retains Squire Cup

Saturday, August 1st, 2009
Gerard van Antwerpen’s experience showed when he sprinted in to retain the Ray Squire Memorial in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Troubador Trophy event at Rapaura last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 70km massed start event covering six laps of the lower Rapaura circuit got off to a quick start with 25 riders still intact at the end of the first lap. An attack by Tony Catterick and Chris Heywood on lap two dwindled the front group to 19 and the later to a stable 13 riders. Van Antwerpen broke out of the bunch approximately 300m from the finish with only Kevin Bishell staying with him. Van Antwerpen won by a bike length to Bishell with 3 seconds back to Jamie Hawke who just headed off Heywood and Catterick in the group finish. The Troubador Trophy for the handicap win again saw Denis Church (off 30m) in the winning seat after teaming up with Lisa McManaway. Church won by just 42 seconds over Todd Neal (1m 30s), with Jamie Kidd (1m 30s) and Marcel Mulder (1m 30s) third equal.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 35km massed start over 3 laps of the open circuit. The duel between the top two riders went right to the line with Callum Saunders just edging out Ethan Roach in a close finish. Just over 3 minutes back Will Hart pressured his rivals over the latter stages to take third place by 6 seconds to Quinn Karwowski and another 9 seconds back to Nick Blakiston and Sonia Ginders. The Troubador Trophy for the sealed handicap win went to Karwowski by a good margin of 56 seconds to Hart and another 15 seconds to Blakiston in third place.
