Top Rides Miss Honours

Saturday, May 30th, 2009
Close racing over the hilly Blenheim to Awatere Valley and return course saw a grandstand finish in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s James Palatchie Memorial Cup event last Saturday afternoon.
The 45km open grade handicap event started at Riverlands covering a course over the Weld and Dashwood Pass into the Awatere Valley Road and return. The three large bunches of backmarkers soon stomped their dominance on the rest of the field with each group only losing a few riders over the climbs. The last of the frontmarkers, Denis Church (off 28min) was caught after a great effort only 5km from home. The remnants of the 5m 30s group just managed to sneak home 15 seconds ahead of the scratch group. The sprint to the line saw a great win to Bryan Streeter over co-markers Ryan Lock, Damian Vercoe and Wayne Smith. Scratch rider Conway Taylor recorded fastest time from Chris Heywood and Josh Scott.
The junior under 17 grade rode a handicap event over 24km for the Palatchie Cup on the Taylor Pass Road. The twice out and return course saw the 3 minute markers work their way through the field to sprint for the major placings. A photo finish saw Nick Blakiston get the nod over Sonia Ginders with Elodie Jacoby in third place. Fastest time went to scratch marker Callum Saunders in another close finish over Pim Greven.
Results:
Open grade- James Palatchie Memorial Cup 45km hcp, B Streeter (off 5m 30s) 1, R Lock (off 5m 30s) 2, D Vercoe (off 5m 30s) 3, W Smith (off 5m 30s) 4, C Taylor (off scr) 5, C Heywood (off scr) 6, A Clark (off 3m) 7, J Scott (off scr) 8, T Neal (off 3m) 9, R Dunn (off 3m) 10. Fastest time, C Taylor (scr) 65m 40s 1, C Heywood (scr) s.t. 2, J Scott (scr) s.t. 3, R Dunstan (scr) s.t. 4, A Clark (3m) 68m 40s 5.
Junior under 17 grade- Palatchie Cup 24km hcp, N Blakiston (off 3m) 1, S Ginders (off 3m) 2, E Jacoby (off 3m) 3, D Cresswell (off 7m) 4, C Saunders (off scr) 5. Fastest time, C Saunders (scr) 41m 35s 1, P Greven (scr) s.t. 2, W Hart (scr) 41m 40s 3.
It was unfortunate 4 riders were disqualified in the open grade event  because of traffic infringements. A brilliant ride by Brent Harris (off 3min) saw him cross the line first 40 seconds ahead of the next rider, and scratch rider Richard Anderson also had an excellent ride to finish 2 seconds ahead of his co-markers. Hard luck chaps, but a lesson to be learnt by all.

Testing Climbs For Riders

Thursday, May 28th, 2009
Hill climbing will certainly play a major part in the results of the riders in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s James Palatchie Memorial Cup event  tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 45km handicap event from Blenheim into the Awatere Valley and return has always been a true test for the riders, since its inception in 1947, with the climbs over the Weld and Dashwood Pass. The event starts on SH1 in Riverlands and follows a course into the Awatere Valley Road before turning home to finish in Alabama Rd opposite Riverlands hall. Past winners of the prestigious event lining up tomorrow are Kevin Bishell (1983), Antony Clark (2004), Mary Lister (2006) and Gill Painter (2008). Bishell has a great record in the event by taking fastest time in 1983, 1989, 1990 and 2001, and after over 25 years is still amongst the favourites for time honours along with Gerard van Antwerpen and Conway Taylor.
All riders are to assemble for the open race at Riverlands Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a handicap event over 24km on the Taylor Pass Road for the Palatchie Cup. On recent form Callum Saunders will be favoured for time honours on the rolling course. Riders are to assemble just beyond the new roundabout on Taylor Pass Road at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

Van Antwerpen/Taylor Take Two-up

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
Masters riders Gerard van Antwerpen and Conway Taylor teamed well to take the fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Geddes Memorial Cups two-up time trial event from Renwick on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 40km event was ridden in cool and very windy conditions on an out and return course on the Wairau Valley Road. The strong headwind on the outward journey took its toll on many teams with time lost not being able to be picked up on the quick journey home. The Van Antwerpen/Taylor combination (56m 39s) recorded a very good time to take the trophy. The event was robbed of some interest when the Paul Johnson/Josh Scott pairing had mechanical trouble on the return journey when vying for the lead. The minor placings went to Jamie Kidd/Martin Fletcher (61m 25s) and David Craig/Stephen Rooney (62m 59s). The sealed handicap Trophy also went to Van Antwerpen and Taylor by 16 seconds to Kidd and Fletcher with another 19 seconds back to Todd Neal and Glen Herkt in third place.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 16km two-up time trial up the Waihopai Valley Road and return. THe Ethan Roach/Callum Saunders pairing rode a time of 28m 20s for the win. The minor placings went to Pim Greven/Nick Blakiston (32m 10s) and Will Hart/Sonia Ginders (32m 41s).
Results:

Hawke Takes Northbank Massed Start

Saturday, May 16th, 2009
A close sprint finish saw junior under 19 rider Jamie Hawke take fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s massed start event at Renwick last Saturday afternoon.
The 40km open grade event ridden in cool conditions covered an out and return course on the Northbank Road. On the outward journey after several attacks the front group was reduced to 12 riders who remained together to the finish. Marcel Mulder gave a strong lead out in the sprint but was pipped by Hawke with Chris Heywood taking third place ahead of Tony Catterick and Gerard van Antwerpen. The sealed handicap was won by George Looman (3m) who had a good ride by managing to stay with the front group. The minor placings went to Karina Taege (21m) and Bryan Streeter (5m).
The junior under 17 grade competed in a massed start event on the same course over 20km. Three riders broke from the field with Callum Saunders taking the sprint finish from Will Hart and Nick Blakiston respectively. Blakiston’s effort was rewarded with the sealed handicap win from Hart and Saunders respectively.

Mass Start this Saturday, 16th May

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

In response to a request from riders we are trialling a mass start race this weekend with a neutralised zone at the beginning of the race.

The idea is that it will give folks a chance to ride with some people that they do not usually for a few kilometres and to allow people to settle into the race before the scratch bunch put the hammer down.

As an added bonus the neutralised zone can also be your warm up, so we will aim to start at 1:30pm sharp.

See you all at Forest Estate winery at 1:00pm for registration and race briefing.

New Rider McManaway Wins

Saturday, May 9th, 2009
A close sprint finish saw Lisa McManaway take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Funnell Trophy event from Fairhall hall last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 41km handicap event drew a good field of forty riders in the cool but reatively calm conditions. The riders covered two laps of the large Hawkesbury circuit and one lap of the small Hawkesbury circuit before returning home. Most handicap groups stayed fairly intact over the first two laps with the back groups closing in in the final 10kms. The scratch group’s strength had been enhanced by the return of Kevin Bishell and Tony Catterick, and had pulled in all but two groups with 5km to go. The 22 minute front markers, Denis Church, Gill Painter, Sue Heagney and Sharon de Castro were unlucky to be overhauled by the 3 remaining 15 minute markers with just 2km to go. This trio sprinted in with McManaway taking the win by half a bike length from Leonie van den Bergh and Stu Curnow in third place. Forty five seconds later Gerard van Antwerpen led in the large chasing bunch to again take the fastest time honours just ahead of co-markers Catterick, Bishell and Jamie Hawke.
The junior under 17 grade 22km massed start/sealed handicap event for the James Bros.Trophy was ridden once around the large Hawkesbury circuit and return. The race was turned into a bit of disarray when several riders went the wrong way. Will Hart and Sonia Ginders worked well together with Hart taking the win from Ginders at the line. Nick Blakiston came in 3 minutes back for third place. The sealed handicap went to Ginders from Hart and Blakiston.
Results:
Open grade- Funnell Trophy 41km hcp, L McManaway (off 15m) 1, L van den Bergh (off 15m) 2, S Curnow (off 15m) 3, S Heagney (off 22m) 4, G Painter (off 22m) 5, D Church (off 22m) 6, S de Castro (off 22m) 7, G van Antwerpen (off scr) 8, T Catterick (off scr) 9, K Bishell (off scr) 10. Handicap Win To Halligan

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009
Pete Halligan gave a good display of sprinting when he won Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade event on the Waihopai Road last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 40km handicap event covered a course from the Grove Mill Winery to just beyond Craiglochart and return. The eight strong 4 minute bunch worked hard to pick up the 6 minute group before the turn for home. This large group came home quickly to hold off the two minute break bunch and scratch bunch by just 40 seconds and 1 minute 15 seconds respectively. Halligan was to strong in the sprint to the line from Andrew Gifford (4m), Wayne Smith (6m) and Chris Ireland (6m).  Scratch marker Gerard van Antwerpen again took fastest time from co-markers Chris Heywood and David Craig.
The junior under 17 grade rode a 20km handicap event to just beyond the Spy Base and return. Laura de Castro (off 20m) made the most of her handicap to take victory by just 2 seconds. A group of 5 riders sprinted for the minor placings with Callum Saunders (off 3m) taking second place ahead of scratch rider Ethan Roach and Leatham landon-Lane (off 3m). Roach took fastest time in 31m 48s.
