Second Victory To Painter

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Veteran cyclist Gill Painter took his second victory of the season when he took line honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s James Palatchie Memorial Cup event from Riverlands last Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 45km handicap event followed a course over the Weld and Dashwood Pass into the Awatere Valley Road and return. On the tailwind outward journey Denis Church (off 31min) had shed his co-marker Painter early on and was first to turn for home, still 20 minutes ahead of the scratch markers. Most groups had lost riders over the climbs and battled into the head winds on the chase home. A big effort from Painter saw him overhaul a tiring Church on the Riverlands straights. As the bunches loomed down on him Painter crossed the line to win by a mere 10 seconds. Craig Murphy (off 8min) just pipped Church for second place with Todd Neal (off 8min), Martyn Loach (off 14min), Willi Borst (off 14min) and Neil Campbell (off 8min) finishing close up respectively. Fastest time honours went to scratch marker David Craig from Chris Heywood with Bronwen Frazer 30 seconds back taking third fastest time.

The junior under 17 grade 24km handicap event for the Palatchie Cup was held twice over an out and return course on Taylor Pass Road. A good field of 18 riders saw close competition amongst the groups in the windy conditions. As field closed up in the last few kilometres it was new rider Georgia Hammond (off 11min) who outsprinted her co-marker Sonia Ginders by two bike lengths to take victory. Alex Peter (off 14m) held on for third place from Pim Greven (off 9min) and Callum Saunders (off 9min). Fastest time honours went to scratch marker Ethan Roach from co-marker Callum Streeter.

Double Honours to Dunstan/Johnson Combo

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Veterans Ray Dunstan and Paul Johnson teamed well to take fastest time and handicap honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Geddes Cups two-up time trial event from Renwick on Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 40km event started and finished at the Waihopai turnoff on State Highway 63 covering a course up the Wairau Valley and return. After a good fast ride to the turn riders were battered by a tough headwind on the return journey. The Dunstan/Johnson combination had a convincing win in recording 55 minutes 22 seconds, with their closest rivals Cameron Karwowski and Chris Heywood being the only other team to go under the hour with a good 56 minutes 25 seconds. The David Craig/Martin Fletcher pairing recorded 60 minutes 14 seconds for third place.

The hard conditions also saw the top riders take the handicap placings. Dunstan/Johnson (55m 22s) won from Craig/Fletcher (55m 44s) and Karwowski/Heywood (55m 55s) respectively.

The junior under 17 grade rode a two-up time trial over 20km up the Waihopai Valley and return. The challenge for time honours saw a convincing victory to Callum Streeter/Ethan Roach (30m 47s) from Jamie Hawke/Richard Anderson (32m 01s) and Leatham Landon-Lane/Callum Saunders (38m 11s). The sealed handicap went to Landon-Lane/Saunders (30m 11s) from Elodie Jacoby/Anna Duggan (30m 38s) and Streeter/Roach (30m 47s).

De Castro Takes Line Honours

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Sharon de Castro’s consistent efforts paid off when she took line honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s event on the Northbank Road last Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 40km handicap event started at Forrest Estate Winery on State Highway 6 and covered a course up the Northbank Road and returned to finish just before the main road. De Castro and Marie Higgison off the 22m limit mark broke away from their co-markers and never looked back. The two frontrunners teamed well with the sprint to the line going to de Castro from Higgison with a clear margin of 4 minutes back to their nearest rivals. The 12 strong 6 minute group managed to stay clear of the backmarkers to take the rest of the minor placings. Pete Halligan took third place in heading off Todd Neal, Brett Burns, and Rhonda Murphy. The 7 strong 1 minute break bunch rode with conviction to catch the 2m 30m group on the return journey and in doing so managed to snatch time off the scratch group by a mere 1 second. Ray Dunstan took the time honours from Brett Walker, Paul Newman, Marcel Mulder and David Craig.

The junior under 17 grade rode a 20km handicap event on the same course. It was again the front markers that provided the action by coming home just over 2 minutes clear of the scratch bunch. The 18 minute group of Nick Blakistan, Piers Landon-Lane and Lydia Barnett teamed well with Blakiston finishing well to win by 4 seconds over Landon-Lane and Barnett. Richard Anderson had an excellent debut to road racing when he took fastest time honours from his scratch co-markers Callum Streeter and Ethan Roach respectively.

Streeter Smashes Record

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Junior under 17 rider Callum Streeter outsprinted his rivals and smashed the record when he won the James Brothers Trophy at Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s events at Fairhall on Saturday afternoon.

The junior under 17 grade 22km massed start event started and finished at Fairhall hall taking in one lap of the large Hawkesbury circuit. A good field of 18 riders started with Streeter, Ethan Roach and Jamie Hawke soon riding away. The trio worked hard together with Streeter taking line honours convincingly from Roach and Hawke respectively. Streeter’s time of 34 minutes 09 seconds sheared 18 seconds off the record set by Nathan Stretch in 1996. The sealed handicap section was won by the consistent Emma Crosswell who was 2 seconds up on Daniel Cresswell with Streeter taking third place 2 minutes 33seconds back.

The open grade 41km handicap event for the Funnell Trophy took in two laps of the large Hawkesbuy circuit and one lap of the small circuit also starting and finishing at Fairhal hall. After the first two laps it was consistent riding by the 13 minute bunch that saw them in control. With 12km to go the small scratch group of George Baxter, Kevin Bishell and Chris Heywood were only 10 seconds up on time on the 3 minute 2nd break bunch of 10 riders. This 3m group had caught the 6 minute group which swelled their numbers to 15 riders and were 1 minute up on time on the 1 minute 30 second break bunch.

The front five stayed away and a good close sprint to the line saw Lance Spencer take line honours from Martyn Loach, Peter Burge, Willi Borst and Wayne Barnett. Conway Taylor, Antony Clark and Martin Fletcher headed in the big bunch one and a half minutes back. The sratch trio rallied in the final stages with Baxter taking fastest time from Bishell and Heywood 31 seconds up on the Taylor’s group.

Forty two riders started in the open grade 44km handicap event which started and finished in Vickerman Street, Grovetown, and covered 3 laps of the Lower Wairau circuit. During the first two laps it was the strong scratch group that was the big mover, pulling in the 1m 30s and 3m groups. The final lap saw the 22m front markers still in control with the win looming. Four riders sprinted for line honours with Painter having the edge over Sharon de Castro, Malinda Spencer and Marie Higgison respectively. The backmarkers picked up the 6m 30s group 3km from home to see 25 riders sprint in 1m 30s behind the winners. Scratch marker Cameron Karwowski was a convincing winner to take the fastest time trophy, ahead of George Baxter, Larry Kendall, David Craig and Marcel Mulder.

The junior under 17 grade rode a 24km handicap event over one and a half laps of the open course for the Amtman and Sincock Trophies. The 8m 30s and the 14m 30s group joined up mid-race to form a strong group to ride through the field. It was Callum Saunders (8m 30s) wo had to much sting at the end to comfortably win the Amtman Trophy from co-marker Leatham Landon-Lane, Emma Crosswell (14m 30s), Jess Ives (8m 30s), Sonia Ginders (8m 30s) and Daniel Cresswell (14m 30s).
